Garmin Edge 500 crappy data point

posted this over in the garmin forums too but maybe someone here can advise:

compare these two activities (for example)

    This one was today
    http://connect.garmin.com/player/82709692

This one a few weeks ago
    http://connect.garmin.com/activity/71826883

Zooming in anywhere along the route show the GPS line much much much more accurate previous than it is now.
In the two links if you zoom into where the R118 crosses the N11, about 2km from the start of each activity you can see the extreme difference in recording.

The earlier one shows exactly the route I took, you can even see the sharp 180 degree bends, in the newer on its just a straight line missing out a huge amount. All my activities up to a couple of weeks ago showed the exact route I took very accurately, now it just shows straight lines from points about 500m apart and that's useless to be honest.

I just don't get why its changed so much:confused::confused:

I'm not sure if it's a setting change or the new 2.7 update but why has it gotten so crappy lately? Anyone know how to fix it?

Edit: garmins forums are crappy and i've already gotten locked out of it :(

ah, reply in garmin forum help, it's cos one activity is opened using the player which cuts out a load of data points.

so its only the player that it looks crap in

All the data points for every activity are there - it's just the rendering of them that skips out lots of detail. If you bring the activities into something like RideWithGPS or Strava, you'll see them in all their glorious detail. Both of these websites have the ability to import activities directly from your Garmin device, i.e. you don't have to first export them from Garmin Connect and then import them to the website.

Also if you're on a Mac, try Ascent, great piece of software thats been evolving along nicely, with a great 'Compare' feature. €29 and miles better than that Garmin Connect junk.

    :pac::pac::pac:

I'd have bigger problems than GPS data if I was stuck on a Mac:D

Get the 2.7 update and turn on 1 second recording - it is actually way more accurate in the gps trace over the stock 'smart' recording.

+1 on that Murph and cantalach arr saying - GC is very limited and doesn't do a great job with the data you provide it, look into ridewithgps and strava anyway and ascent for mac looks very good too (won't someone port it to PC!?!)

    Have done that already :)

I've used ridewithgps a bit already, must bang one of the files into it to see how much better it is. I've used it to draw a few routes before but that's about all

went and got ascent on yer suggestion and i must say it is def worth the dosh. mygarmin training center sucks for the most part in comparison. love the multi compare function and watching me self riding against me self represented by colored dots along the road.

    the maps are just brilliant.

thanks murph for the heads up
