    Hi,
We are doing the Kanturk 3 day and one of our guys has broken his BB.
It's a shimano crankset cap thingy that keeps it tight.

If anyone around Mallow/Cork/the area had a spare, or just as a loan for the 2 last race days, we would be eternally grateful...

    Thanks

Thats the end cap for the L/H crank of a Hollowtech2 crankset I think, (picture is HUUUUGE)
You *can* get away without it, its only torqued to 5Nm and is really just to locate the crank onto the splined axle correctley, as long as the two pinch bolts are done up to 25Nm you should be okay for the two days. Obviously if you feel the crank loosening , stop and tighten, but they aint critical, you can get away without them for a short time. Locating one is preferable, but it shouldnt keep him out of the race.

There are different sizes of them too, AFAIK the Road ones are smaller Diameter than the MTB ones.

I think that I've got one from an FSA crankset. You about Cork city tonight? I'm about to head out and can bring it with me. PM with your number in the next 10 minutes if you want it.

don't tighten the pinch bolts up to 25Nm shimano say 12-15Nm for my ultegra 6600 crank and the cap is only done up to 0.7-1.5Nm
I say it would be ok without it

Sorry your right, I knew there was a 2 and a 5 on the sticker! Im not near my bike.
It is okay without it for a short time, one of the lads rode for weeks without it, but play did develop after a month or so. (guy was too lazy to order one, they are like e2)

Yep, I agree with the others. That's only the cap and it doesn't contribute much mechanically speaking. I rode the second half of the Amstel Gold course without mine a couple of weeks ago. So long as the pinch bolts are tight enough your friend should be fine.

Has the crank actually been removed from the BB? If not, don't worry about it; the pinch bolts hold the crank arm on, not the plug. Just get a new one at some point. If you have the crank off and need to refit it just push it on and squeeze both cranks together before tightening the pinch bolts. The plug isn't all load bearing -- it's just there to pull the cranks together and take up any slack.
