An app I installed said I needed to root something or other to work, what are the advantages and disadvantages to doing it and also how do I do it?

There are very few advantages to rooting. Sorry I ever did it, wasted so much bloody time arsing around with my bloody phone. If you have no life, then work away, you too can get frustrated with custom roms that don't load, become unstable, inferior updates etc etc. Learn a new language, use words like Ubuntu, gpart, s-off etc etc. ,all to change the splash screen on your phone, its only ever on for a minute when you turn your phone on. So you want more space for apps? Really? Do you really? You use all the ones you have on already?

D2EXT is more stable than, a2sd, is more stable than xpart is more stable than custom partitions etc. Etc. Which is the most stable? Why didn't original manafacturer think of that?

Spend days checking quadrant scores whatever they mean? Benchmark the **** out of it. Linpack? Wtf? I used to boast to my friends about this ****, what was I thinking? :D

Seriously though, maybe rooting improved the performance of older phones but don't waste your time experimenting with this **** just to overclock your processor and burn it out prematurely if you have a newer Desire onwards phone.

    IMO

I've been using Android for over two years, consider myself a heavy user, but never felt the need or desire to root.

You just beat me to it.
'I'm rooting for you' means something completely different here to what it means in the States :D
