Are you interested in the lives of celebrities, and why?

Watching the extraordinary furore which surrounded the prince's wedding, it occurred to me that people's fascination with celebrities is more profound than I ever realised, and yet I am at a loss as to why this interest exists. I suppose it is some sort of escapism to revel in the lives of people with great wealth, but surely that doesn't explain the depth of public's fascination.

Nobody I know on a day to day level is remotely interested in celebrities, and would probably ridicule those who are, but there are probably hundreds of newspapers and magazines, not to mention tv and radio time, devoted to detailing the day to day activities of Jordan, Peter Andre, Cheryl Cole et al, so there is obviously a huge market for them.

So who are the people funding all the media surrounding "celebs", why are they so interested, and are you one of them?

They're just people. I don't get the massive interest in their lives. Just because someone is in a few movies or is a good singer doesn't mean we all have a right to know every detail of their lives.

A bit of an interest if I like their music, films or if I support/follow the team they play for. Not a huge interst though, couldn't care less who they're riding or what they're driving.

Only if I want to insert my penis in them.

I've a passing interest, but I wouldn't be going out of my way to find out everything there is about celebrities. And while I do admit to loving the xfactor, I've no interest in shows like I'm a celebrity

I'll read articles about 'celebrities' once they're talented and held in a high regard and have something to say. I'm talking about interviews with musicians, actors... normally about their work. For example, an interview with the Edge or Cillian Murphy...

But as for this crap of caring about people who've never even done anything to get famous. No sir. I know loads of girls who actually have long conversations about Cherl Cole or 'insert random pair of tits here' ... sickening. Having to listen to it on public transport is pure torture as well.

Wouldnt be interested in the little details of people's lives, only in the stuff that relates to why they became famous in the first place.

I'm not interested in the lives of celebrities, because there are far more interesting things to be interested in.

No interest. I only recently found out who Justin Bieber is. Honestly, that's how much time I spend listening to/watching television or other media!

I'd describe it as a passing interest. It's good to know what sports people are at so you can decipher whether it will hinder their performance or not.

Celebs from tv shows / movies / music industry not so much but if something funny happened I'd read about it.

Some people idolise them and imitate them though which is kind of sad imo

I don't like celebrities to me they are just people that **** and piss like the rest of us pardon the pun, however I do buy magazines because of boredom. to be honest if a celebrity passed me in the street I wouldn't give them a second look. That wedding yesterday was an embarrassment why are the English still stupid enough to fund that family I wonder who paid for the wedding? the tax payer me thinks

No because everything they do is so over rated and blown out of all proportion by the media . There are some who live interesting lives , not all of the front page / every day tabloid kind but it's hard to be interested in many of these people who really live bland and superficial lives .

No. I admit that I used to, but nowadays I can't stand reading about their over blown lives. It especially angers me when *insert female celebrity here* is a perfectly healthy weight, yet is shown in *insert trashy magazine/tabloid here* with a zoomed in microscopic bit of cellulite or something. As for Jordan and the like - what an absolute waste of trees to be printing anything at all about that lowlife. We all complain about the media scrutinising celebrities to such an extent, but the bottom line is that they wouldn't do it if humans didn't buy it. It's pathetic tbh.

    Escapism.Pure and simple.

What scares me most it that people and especially kids idolise muppets who have no discernable skill yet make a fortune for being ....an idiot/dirtbag/slut/wag ...should have just said jordan or kerry:)..I dont have kids but really do feel sorry for all of you that do ..

It's a strange one because in the UK there's all that fuss about super injunctions. It's not right to gag the press, but it'd be nice if the press would cover something more important than tacky gossip and smut.

No interest - actually living my life is infinitely more interesting, to me at least, than gazing on at somebody else living theirs...

    I couldn't give a shit!

    Thanks!

No; not really interested but then at times when everyone is talking about someone you can kind of feel left out in social conversations. I would sometimes have a very passing interest though. I did watch the royal wedding though.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.
