2007 Volvo S40 "Fault In Car Emissions Systems"

    Hi there,

I have a 2007 Volvo S40 for about a year now, no problems until this morning..

Turned on the car and drove a few miles and noticed that the accelerating was not as responsive as normal, pretty slow in first, second and third! (Didnt really get into fourth as i was city driving).

I was running low on Diesel so i filled up and on the restart the Fault In Car Emissions Systems light was on and hasn't gone off since.

Has anybody come across this before and what are the likely problems/remedies/who should i go to in the Dublin area to rectify?

The car is a 1.6 Diesel with 168km on the clock, serviced last at 160km.

    Thanks

Stuck EGR valve maybe? I wouldn't think that has a DPF.

Just googled those there to see what the abreviations made,

Ill head out and have a look in a min,

Can the valve just get stuck?or could it be dirty and need replacing?

I thinks she has a DPF alright Plug. I'm almost certain they're the 110 bhp...

Ya i think its 110 Bhp

The EGR valve can be removed and cleaned, but to be sure as to what exactly is wrong, it will probably need to be scanned for fault codes. Where are you based?

Did a bit of sussing on this and it certainly looks like you have a DPF on this car, however this should not cause a performance issue unless it has become completely blocked. This is unlikely to have happened overnight ;)

Again, a scan for fault codes will point the repair effort in the right direction

Can anybody recommend a good garage to have a look at this for me?

I've seen the plugs in them EGR valves get corroded, out of all the EGR valves around they are not too bad regarding reliability.

Also I forgot to say, the metal intercooler pipe can slip on them and cause loss of power and the vacuum pipe that goes on the boost pressure control valve can become loose and cause series power loss

I hope it isn't the DPF, expensive to replace.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,770 ✭✭✭Nedved85

I read elsewhere its about 1000euro to replace the DPF... arrgh! :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,360 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Yep, cost me around that last year on my old 2006 S40 1.6d. Get the fault code read first though.

Did you get a reduction in power when your DPF blocked, or just a warning on the dash?

It could be a DPF which will give these symptoms ie lack of power but the op mentioned that they ran low on fuel.

The s40 diesel goes into limp mode when its almost empty of diesel--I think its when it says less than 20km to empty.

It usually stays like that until its filled past the first red line on the dash petrol guage which could be around 20+ euros.

We`ve had customers that needed to put in 20-30 euros to reset it.

Worth a go before bringing it in for diagnostics.

Just to clarify i was running low, but the "fuel low" warning light still hadn't gone off so there was 150+km left in the tank (id say the light was about to come on..

After filling up, this is when the "Fault in Car emissions" light came on.., power was still sluggish.

Sounds like dpf then.Whats the exact message?

Is it "fuel system service required"??

Both, engine managment light comes on and the car goes into limp home mode where it drives on reduced power.

I had a similar problem very recently & I'm in Terenure so I booked it in with the Volvo dealer on the Long Mile Road,I had used them previously & was happy to go there again. The problem was that an air pipe had become disconnected and was letting in to much air causing the engine to lose power, it took less than an hour to fix & thankfully wasn't expensive.

There should be a message..did you press the "message" button at the end of the indicator switch?

I have also seen both of the above....funny enough on peugeot/citroens the engine light will not come on when a low boost p-code pops up.
If the dpf is blocked it will usally come up with a high boost p-code.

Get p-codes read on some sort of diagnostic equipment or a hand held code reader and see what comes up..:)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,770 ✭✭✭Nedved85

Got this looked at by a Volvo dealer.

DPF needs to be replaced (i was assured at time of purchase last year this was done ... grrrh!)

Boost sensor needs to be replaced & a certain fuel need to be topped up(didnt get the name of this),

Costs €1000 inc VAT for all the above, parts and labour.
