Death!! Why is it so wrong to want it?

I'm 28, have lots of friends, and can be pretty fun and outgoing when I want to be. But for the past year or so I've become fed up with life, i've no interest in anything and while I haven't "given up" on life I'm looking forward to death. I've seen a doctor and am seeing a psychologist but nothing they have said has changed my outlook.

What is wrong with wanting to die? What is the big stigmata surrounding it?? If I don't wanna work I quit, so if I wanna die why shouldn't I??

Because you only live once and then you'll be dead forever. That's my logic anyways, may as well experience it because very soon it will be oblivion for eternity. Maybe you're just a bit bored? There's a whole world out there, go out and explore it instead of throwing it away

Well wanting to die means you are suicidal - hardly a normal state of mind.

But why would you want to die? If you do not like work you quit....and find something else. If you are fed up with your life, why not find something else different to do and make it interesting again?

You have it wrong - life is too short.

Because there's only life, there's no epilogue.

perhaps because they think that you very well might change your mind.

you said yourself that it's only in the past year you've started to feel this way.

It sounds like you're referring to this... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_drive

If you listen to Johnny Cash songs he seems to be looking forward to death because of the afterlife his religion promised him.

But looking forward to death because you're bored with life reminds me a lot of that saying "faraway hills are greener"

    Ps It's Stigma, not stigmata.

Randy: Yeah I'm glad she's not dead any more. Being dead is definitely worse than being alive. When you're dead you can't do all the cool stuff you can do when you're alive. You and I, we can do all kinds of cool stuff cuz we're living, we're not dead, we're alive. If we were dead we wouldn't be able to do all the cool stuff we can do, becuz we're alive. Dead people can't do cool stuff. Only people that are alive can do cool stuff, cuz they're living, and you have to be living to be able to do cool stuff. You have to be alive. Yeah, 'cept when you're alive sometimes bad stuff happens too. Like sometimes you can get into a car wreck, or you can have a headache or twist your ankle or even stub your big toe... So being alive is kinda hard too, but I think it's definitely better than being dead...

To give a proper answer- it's because of what being dead actually means. It is an end to everything; who you are, what you do, who you know. This terrifies a lot of people. It most certainly terrifies me.

It might be the end, but what's wrong with that?? Maybe it's a simplistic way of looking at it but if it is the end so what? I'll be dead and gone, I won't miss anything, it's not like I'd be dead and regretting it, I'd just be gone. I'm not interested in trying new things or doing new things.

Spend some time around the families & friends of people who have lost their lives to suicide and then ask that question. The hole you leave in the lives of the people who love you is never, ever filled. In many cases people (especially parents, siblings & close friends) never recover. If you really feel that there's no point living any longer then go back to your doctor & tell them

    Op

    Are you contemplating suicide?

Or are you just looking forward to dying naturally?

Your question was why it was so wrong for you to die. The answer is not because you'll be gone, but it's the people you're leaving behind.

What about how it would impact other people though?

I live with long term clinical depression and it's very hard. I go to counselling and take medication though because amongst other reasons I know other people would suffer awfully if I hurt myself.

Yes, life is long and harder for some than others. It's not easy. It's a lot of work to keep going but all I can advise you is engage, get up and fight for yourself because no-one else will. I have a tendency to nihlism but medication and CBT have helped me.

It's not good enough to be passive and say the psychologist hasn't said anything to change your mind. It's up to you to change your own mind. That's YOUR job.

It takes effort and willpower, unfortunately this is the hand we've been dealt.

@MissFlitworth, I'm sure its the exact same with the parents of children who die young, friends and family of cancer victims etc. Death happens.

@tenchi fan, bit of both, I wish it would just happen naturally though.

@boneyassbogman, Im sure they'd get over it.

And if that is what you think, then you are extraordinarily naive and unbelievably ignorant. I would advise you to try and consult with family members of suicide victims and ask them if they get over it. In fact, check out console.ie

I'm not naive. Maybe it's my state of mind, or maybe I'm incredibly selfish, but I don't care about anyone else. At this point in time I don't really care about anything.

    weldoninhio,

I am afraid we are not qualified to offer you appropriate advice; if you are feeling suicidal you must tell a qualified professional immediately.

If you need to talk to someone in the meantime then you may find some useful contacts here.

If you want more generalised discussion on suicide that doesn't involve threats against your own life or other posters having to convince you not to harm yourself then Humanities would be a more appropriate forum for your question.

    All the very best
