I am starting a new job soon (roughly in 2 weeks) and 6 weeks from that start date I had been planning on going on holidays abroad. Myself and my girlfriend had the planning in place with quite sometime.

A couple of people are now saying I shouldn't because it is too early into a new job...so from the title question what is your opinion?

Well just ask your boss - if it's ok to take the time off, it they say it is then go for it, if not then looks like you'll have to wait.

Weren't you asked or given the opportunity to tell them during your interview?
If not you should ask them now... If they say yes, then giggidy giggidy... If they say no, don't go.
    Simple

    How long is the holiday?
1 week would be alright, 2 weeks would be a little iffy. At the same time your employer might say, "**** it, he's had his holiday so I dont have to worry about him taking anymore extended time off after that".

Don't expect to be getting holiday pay for it that soon into the job, but if they are reasonable then you should be OK...hopefully.

    wow quick replys!

its a one week holiday, and i have 25 days holidays in my contract so from that side its ok.

i could push it out till mid july but then my girlfriend is not too happy...a totally different ball game!!

Read your contract - you may have 25 days after 1 year. It is normal to earn your holidays - 1.75 days per month back-worked, for example.

I doubt after 6 weeks you will get paid leave.

You'll have induction on the first day, mention it then. They'll appreciate you being open and frank with them

If your boss says no or I'll fire you, it's up to yourself!

Dont they ask if you have holidays booked?

anyway if they didnt ask it i'd probably just wait till july or whenever - This will give you time to find your feet - figure out how they do things and get to know people.

That would be none of their business unless they have offered you a job already.

Say it now rather then later or you will be frowned upon ;)

It says he starts in 2 weeks!

All the jobs i've done they've asked me on my first day

Yep, but no reason for them to be asking at the interview stage.

was never asked had i it booked, and besides, i dont have it booked as of yet and now i dont know can i afford to wait 2 weeks before prices presumably start to go up.

If I hired someone and they already had a holiday booked then I'd expect them to let me know when they were offered the job and there's not a lot I could do about it. I certainly wouldn't pull the job offer just because of that. But if they'd nothing booked and just wanted to go then I'd have to say no, that's just taking the p*ss imo.

You don't even have it booked yet? Either book it now for the time you want and call them and tell them you had it booked a while, or you should in all common decency leave it till later in the year!

It's up to you to keep the job not up to them to keep you in it!

If you've not already got it booked then I'd consider it a bit different and you shouldn't be going anywhere until you've worked sufficient time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 114 ✭✭Keller Bear

never said i had it booked only planned, planned with so long that in my head it was "booked" but not most importantly actually physically booked.

with a lot of jobs these days you have to ask for the time off before you book. as so many employers have rosters for staff holidays to make sure they have sufficient cover. if you'd only be in the job 6 weeks it might be still considered a probationary period. even if it isnt a real probationary period where you can be let go, how you perform in that period can really define things. id ask the gf to please reconsider moving it back a bit for the sake of the new job and settling in so you dont make enemies as soon as youre in the door.
if it was already booked thatd be another matter.
