Patio and Paths around renovated house

    Arghh...

We're coming towards the end of a very problematic renovation. We're now trying to pin down the issue of a patio and paths at the back of the house.

We have an upper patio (16x10 feet) and a lower patio (about 20 x 15 feet), a small courtyard (about 10 feet x 6 feet) and another small passageway.

We are getting so much conflicting information about what to put down, my brain is hurting. We've visited Tobermore in Galway, Kilsaran in Meath and a garden centre here in Limerick. Each time we think we have an answer, someone comes up with a killer argument against our choice.

Yesterday we decided to go with a lovely sandstone for the whole area but our (current) builder said that at 22mm thick it was too thin - it would crack and break very easily. Furthermore, being laid on a cement and sand mix, it would require the installation of subterranean drainage channels. Given that we have very little green area left in our remaining garden, this doesn't seem feasible.

So, if you could please. Some recommendations for some nice, cost-effective and durable materials appropriate to the area.

    Thanks in advance.

Thank you both for your help.

I went on-line on Friday and found a company in Roscrea that so stone. They have a beautiful Tipperary sandstone that is 30-40mm thick and at a price (including VAT and delivery) that is much better than any stone suppliers in Limerick.

Its also much nicer than the fabricated stone and not much dearer (€24.20 per metre squared VAT included)

So, we went back to Roscrea today and purchased.
