Don't know what forum to put this in. Please move if necessary.

I lodged a cheque a few days ago and the bank returned it to me with a stamp saying refer to drawer.

Do any of you know if I can relodge this cheque or do I need a new cheque written to me because unfortunately that may not be possible to get.

You can re-submit it, just make sure the Drawer has adequate funds to pay it, otherwise you're looking at additional charges.

Was the cheque made of a plastic polymer?

You need to contact the person who wrote the cheque. But I sense this is not going to end well.

did they not change the law recently. is it not now an offence to write a cheque knowing funds are not available?

My friend used to stick them up on the window of his shop. They weren't there too long as the writer used to arrive, very embarrassed, with the money to cover the cheque and retrieve it. Good policy i thought.

Never accepted a cheque from anyone myself. Bank draft or nothing in that situation.

A cheque basically amounts to someone scribbling "IOU 100 bux!!!!!" on a scrap of paper.

I always take the cheque to the persons bank and ask to cash it - you need your ID but it saves a bouncer coming back.

Brought one to a bank and the lady was able to tell me that there wasn't enough money to change it - he didn't have €700 in his account to cover the cheque....when i phoned him to tell him this he savaged me down the phone for embarrasing him in his local branch. I told him i was going to be embarrased that evening when i'd no money to feed my family with - he apologised and suddenly had the cash on him to meet me!!

I worked in a machine shop a few years back, a local builder who was renouned for bouncing cheques came in and wanted some hydraulic fittings made up for his track machine. About two weeks later the cheque bounced. The boss sent me out that night to remove all the fittings. At 8AM the next morning your man was in with the cash. Proper order.

Why are you asking us? The stamp clearly tells you to ask your drawer. I spoke to my dressing table about your query and she referred me to the wardrobe. Unfortunately he couldn't help either.

I've taken note of your hilarious wit. I will use this great sort of wit in the future. Thanks so much.

Appreciate the other replies. Thanks again.
