What constitutes as a Rating? I've no interest in the royal wedding but they say 2billion people will watch it. So at what point does the channel consider the watcher to count as a rating? Does it have to be a certain time on the channel or just flick through the channels and that is regarded?

There are three different kinds of ratings.

The first is the normal one that you see in the papers or whatever, and that represents the average number of viewers throughout the length of the programme. If a thousand people watch the first half and 500 switch of at the interval, for example, the rating will be 750.

The other two are only used by industry insiders, and advertisers.

The audience "reach" is the figure for everyone who watched for at least one minute of a programme, but it won't really represent how much they liked it.

The audience "share" is the percentage of the viewing public who watched. If a thousand tellies are on, and 600 of them are watching the match, then the match has an audience share of 60%.

That's what I understand, at least, but I am open to correction from more knowledgeable types.
