i might get the yellow jacket for the evenings it looks ok

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,565 ✭✭✭thebouldwhacker

Well I bought some of these over the years, the gloves about 3 years now and their still in good nick, foot pump for mtb, still works, computer still works, saddle bag and tools, yep you guessed still being used... tbh their stuff (for the price) is pretty damn good.
For example a cat eye velo5 is €18 (ish) and has; speed, max speed, trip and total distance and time. This is €5 (or there abouts) and bar power or candace has all the stats you'd want, prob worth €50 in cat eye terms (lives). I have bought 3 of these from aldi one for my gf bike, one for me and one for a mate and all three are still working. The magnet must be close to the sensor other than that no issues.

Yes! Bike lights, will be getting my hands on them, even if only as a back up pair. The high viz jacket is great, have had it for two years, tempted to get another as a spare also

Is the jacket a breathable material or just a flap in the back for air?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 697 ✭✭✭biomed32

there is just an air vent in the back so not the most breathable. I generally only use it for commuting home from work or maynooth late at night as a high viz jacket. Its a good wind breaker all the same if your out on a spin too or so I have felt, hope it helps

Ya i got gloves least time and held up well - good to know the bike computer is not wirless as thats now off the list, anyone get the tubes before?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 117 ✭✭eoin88

I bought the soft shell jacket last year. It's light and breathable so nice for the summer. It's not waterproof though, as I discovered halfway through the Wicklow 200!

do you think there will be people queuing up at 9am on thursday to buy the bike gear

yeah i got one, it's not any good for presta valves, the nossle wears out after a few goes. Bite the bullet and get a proper replacement, save you the hassle of doing it in a few weeks anyway

Parnell St Aldi was pretty-much wiped out by the time I got there at 10am this morning.

Anyone have a Size 12 lady's soft shell jacket that they'd like to swap for a medium men's (black & yellow) soft shell?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,625 ✭✭✭happytramp

ugh, already! It's only 11.30!! Better head over to Plamerstown and see what's left.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,920 ✭✭✭Vélo

I was in Parnell Strret myself this morning, there was a big crowd around the cycling gear alright. I didn't get anything myself but I saw some people buying locks, I had to hold my tongue.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,146 ✭✭✭Morrisseeee

Just back from Aldi, got a few items, gloves, pump, 2 jerseys (M & L) and a shorts. Regarding the size in the jerseys, both the M & L are similar, not much difference !! I thought the shorts would be crap, but it fitted ok and seems comfortable, it just needs a road test.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,006 ✭✭✭Moflojo

Waterproof jacket seems good too (haven't tested its waterproofedness yet!), it packs small and fits snug.

    Gloves seem decent too.

<bump> So anyone have a size 12 lady's jacket to swap for med. mens black and yellow?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 79 ✭✭Special Red

Big crowd around the cycling gear in the Midleton Aldi this morning. Got the rainproof, foot pump, black jersey, tool kit. Haven't tried them out yet but should be grand for what they are.

Both stores in Galway city didn't have the cycle computers or helmets delivered to them, intensely annoying.

Anyone been to the Coolock Aldi today? I'd cycle up but can't be arsed if the place has been cleaned out

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 721 ✭✭✭Highway_To_Hell

Belgard road seemed to have a lot of stock. No computers, picked up a few pairs of socks, but didn't bother buying them as only 1 aisle was manned and the queues were a mile long.

Was there earlier and they had some stuff but it was going fast. You might still be lucky.

I was up there around 10.30. Looked like the soft shell jacket was nearly gone (not that I was buying anyway), but there seemed to be a good few of everything else. Got the light rain jacket and some MTB tubes.

The track pump is only rated to 6 bar so useless for road bikes. Computer seems like the wireless ones on eScam, which work fine except that the clock runs a bit slow and don't have ... er ... wires.

They had a huge pile of gloves left. Not much padding on them but at €4 I thought they'd be more popular than that. They'll still have some of those at Christmas, I'd say.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,721 ✭✭✭✭CianRyan

Just back from the Tallaght branch, loads of everything left except the light jackets and cable locks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 357 ✭✭fearcruach

Was in Newlands Cross this morning (9 o clock).

Got soft shell jacket, shirt, compression underwear, shorts, socks, gloves, minipump, tool bag and lights.

Had plenty of everything but only had childrens helmets. Don't know about the cycle computers as wasn't looking for one.

Was about 10 people queuing for nine o clock so not too much off a demand.

I'd heard before that Newlands Cross sells out last in Dublin due to its location.

Was at Aldi in Santry at around 12. Lots of stuff left apart from jerseys. Got gloves and shorts, same as I bought last year and both have stood the test of time. Much more impressed with Aldi shorts than others I have seen...good padding. Place was busy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 806 ✭✭✭AssaultedPeanut

Had a peek in the Coolock branch after all. Not too bad once I stopped looking in the wrong section for a good 5 minutes :o got myself a light jacket, couple of pairs a socks and a little mala for under the saddle :) quite happy with that.
I would've liked a jersey or 2 but ladies stuff in Aldi only seems to come in pink. What was left was all pink anyway

Unfortunately the Pink gear is probably for gents... not my cup of espresso but blame the Giro as it is it's colour

Moving on, long story but I bought one of the large saddle bags, it fits sooooo much. As an experiment I just got a rain jacket, wool arm warmers and a gillet into it, with all tools and on the side strap a pair of waterproof shoe covers and a pair of winter cycling gloves. I reckon if I tried I'dget a jersey in too and def more on the side strap, one for the audax people perhaps....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,625 ✭✭✭happytramp

Got the saddlebag/tool set and the water proof jacket. The jacket conveniently fits quite snugly into the elastic straps on the saddle bag. Got the smaller of the two saddle bags which just about fits the newer specialized mini air tool. Anyone buy the shorts? How are they compared to the Lidl ones?

I bought a pair of shorts, never tried the lidl ones but for a €9 pair of shorts they seem alright.
Good bit of padding on them, I'll go for a cycle a little later/tomorrow depending on how I'm feeling and I'll see what they're like to ride in.

Newbie here-got first road bike this week (Giant rapid 2) and stocked up on gear from Rathmines Aldi this morning-got light cycling jacket, lights, shorts (nicely padded), shirt and compression underwear-not bad for 50 quid or so all in. Re the underwear , I presume you're not meant to wear this under the shorts??

According to the literature it's layer 1, and the shorts are layer 2.

Any point in me walking up to Parnell St tomorrow or has it been cleaned out at this stage do you think? I just want an L light jacket and a saddlebag.

Shorts seemed nice, I had terrible saddle sours yesterday but with the padding it really wasn't an issue at all.

Keep in mind though, 'till today, I was only wearing boardshorts on cycles, so no protection at all.

i got gloves led lights and few other things one thing i did not like look of was the saddlebag as the clip on it did not seem that great now i could be wrong and if i am sry but just wanted to let people know to have a good look at it first before getting it incase i am right i was in a rush.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,565 ✭✭✭thebouldwhacker

tbh the only time I wear 'cycling underwear' is when I'm riding without padded bibs on.
Re wearing cycling shorts, if your new to cycling for the love of god please make sure that when your cycling the shorts aren't slipping down showing where the sun dont shine. There is nothing worse than cycling along and seeing someone out in shorts with their crack waving about saying hello. One of the many reasons that bib shorts are better.
Also while I'm ranting tights are to be tight yes but not so tight as they are translucent, another way to show the world how much junk is in your trunk.
Thank you very much..... good night.

I found myself being very conscious of that tonight.
Until I can fork out ~€70 for a pair of bib shorts though, the Aldi ones will do.

In saying that though, they're quite high waisted and for me anyway, the fit is bang on the mark.

Anyone tell me what the story is with the track pump? I picked one up this morning and reading here its no use for road bikes? Only got the bike last week and after 100 km the tires need pumping so thought this would do. tyres are 700c x 23 i think. 125 psi.
How do u even use the pump(i know thats retarded but hey we all learn somewhere) I tried it on my mtb and alll the air went out. aM I MISSING SOMETHING???

Bought bike this morning and got the:
lights (one of the clips wont fit around the handlebars for front, back went on saddle bar grand)
shorts (nice padding, went for a short spin, no problem, going back tomorrow for another pair)
saddle bag (the clip to connect to the saddle, wont fit on mine, so will be keeping it in the back pack til then)
    pump (hope it works)
jackets and tshirt-all nice and will hopefully get good mileage

Santry didn't appear to have any helmets at all.

All in all, am happy with the purchases so far, will be checking again tomorrow.

Aldi in Rathmines was pretty much picked clean by the time I got there after work. I was after the light jacket but they were all gone. I ended up just getting some of the smaller bits like socks and tiny gloves (for my tiny hands).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 641 ✭✭✭howardmarks

nice one bould. exactly what i needed. Her bike looks very like mine. thanks again. aldi track pump works a treat.

tool bag is grand for the price. and the softshell is good value too. breathable comfortable and pockets on the back.

Thats incorrect, I got the computer in the one on the headford road earlier today but ur right in saying they had no helmets...

What time were u in there , maby they were just sold out allready, I got mine at quater past nine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 697 ✭✭✭biomed32

im pretty sure the aldi in maynooth and celbridge are still stocked up although i cant comment as i sent my friend a list of what i wanted as I wasnt going to be near maynooth today, maybe worth a try

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 106 ✭✭noeleoreid

Did anybody buy the computer and install it yet?? I wasent sure about how to hook it up so the local bike shop did it for me free of charge.

I have it set to run on km per hour but it seems to run fast , i would be at a fairly regular stride / speed and it is giving me speeds of like 21 and 25 km per hour but there is no way I am doin that speed, now im not expert on judging speed by licking my finger and putting it in the air but there is no way the reading on it is accurate.

For the inital programming part, it asks you to input the measurement of the circumference of your tyre in mm, so I measured this (as per instructions) by marking the ground with a pen, having the valve face down to the ground and made one full revolution with the wheel until again the valve was facing the ground and then measured the distance between the two points, which gave me a distance reading of 2100 mm or 210 cm.

Also the magnet is bout 1 mm away from the sensor , about half way down the fork so as far as I can see, The setup is correct but it aint giving accurate readings....

Is it just a piece of sh1t?? Let me know if you bought one as well and your experience with it so far??

    Noel

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,281 ✭✭✭Ricky91t

I got one for my mountain bike( Also use it to go to college and stuff ), I had no way of measuring the circumference so instead found one on google which should be close enough.

I couldn't put it at the top of the fork as mine are too wide so I kept moving it down till it got a reading. Its nearly spot on for the distance reading so I assume the speed is right...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 106 ✭✭noeleoreid

maby i just got a dodgy one so, what can i expect for 6 euro i suppose, anyone else have any experiences with them , let me know?? would be intrested to hear from more people.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,419 ✭✭✭NeedMoreGears

    @noeleoreid - (i) 2100mm sounds about right for a standard 700 x 23 wheel/tyre - mine is 2124.

(ii) are you sure it's not working? 21-25kph is not a madly fast speed. How do you know it's over-reading? Can you check it against something else. Maybe go for a spin with someone who has a different speedo?

    NMG

PS - just checked and the pump is rated up to 6 bar as a previous poster indicated. I'm sure it's grand pump but no use for the road bike.
