Hi I have a 2001 vw caddy tdi that began to cut out randomly a couple of weeks ago this problem has being getting more and more frequent until this morning when I drove out of my estate and the van stopped on the road and has refused to start ever since! I did have the typical caddy immobilizer problems last year where the van just wouldn't start but I found a guy who was able to take out the ecu and turn off the immobilizer could this process be anything to do with my new problems?

It could well be.what are the symptoms now?

Do you get dash lights and all other systems working fine when you turn the key? does it turn over and refuse to fire or does it just point blank do nothing ala a dead battery?

There is an flashing heatplug light on the dash but this has been here for a year or more and is from faulty brake light switch I think, that is the only fault that the engine diagnostics finds but it was a little difficult to get the computer to communicate with the ecu! At the moment the van is turning over but refuses to start as if there is no fuel being sent to it but as I said I can discount the immobilizer as that has been removed and there are no error codes for this showing up.

Dirty fuel filter, burst fuel pipe? Try prime it up and see will it start and run.

could be a few things on them caddy's,

the ignition switch gets worn (usually difficult to turn the key fully)

ecm relay fails (109) usually with the symtoms you described

ecu fails its situated on the right of the windscreen beneath the plastics under the wipers( water finds its way into the ecu)

i had a simular problem. everybody i asked said the prob was relay 109.
turned out to be the immobiliser. 4 differend people plugged into it and it only showed up for one of them so all equipment is different, try pulling fuse no. 18 and see if it starts, but it will only give you one go at it, after that, you can buy a unit on done deal or ebay that plgs into the diagnostic socket and it bypasses the immobiliser, costs e50
