Part of the election promise from the new government was the abolition of various quango agencies. Given that they have gotten off to such a slow start with this promise do any posters have suggestions as to which of these organisations should be abolished. Please include valid reasons for your suggestions.

I'd start with the Road Safety Authority. They seem to have nothing better to do than find new ways to torture motorists with new regulations. Which on top of the current climate squeezing everyone, likely increased motoring costs (fuel duty, road tolls etc), a bunch of civil servant busybodies looking for new ways to drown the people in red tape is EXACTLY what we need. I don't think.

Sack the lot of them, and if there is anything that will genuinely improve road safety, let the Dept of Transport handle it directly.

The Office of The Irish Language Commissioner:, costs a million a year for himself and five staff and more again in hidden costs as they compel public service bodies to use Irish.

This link has a comprehensive list of quangos........ not hard to pick a 100 or so to get rid of

Surely it'd be a quicker, easier task to put to gather a list of ones worth keeping with solids reasons behind them...
There can't be too many :D

I agree . We should disband all of them , and then allow each board one year to justify why it should be re instated.

Then the next year should involve all board members re applying for their job.

People like celia Larkin and Maurice Ahern would get some shock when they would have to prove their existence .

I bet only 10-30% of these would prove to be legitimate .

We can't afford quangos and their extravagance

    Quanglo Irish Bank for one.

Seriously, I think many of them are doing a necessary public service and should be retained.

I agree but I think if you examine them, you could merge some of the functions.

    For example:
Health and Children Food Safety Authority of Ireland 1999
Health and Children Food Safety Promotion Board 1999

Do we really need two quangos for food safety? Why not one that can perform both functions? It would probably be more efficient and more likely to talk with one voice.

Both these Quango's were also setup in the same year suggesting we need to look at how we decide Quango's are necessary and put in a process so that such waste is caught before it is created.

I don't really see a reason for multiple Quango's with really similar titles. Merge them into single entities and have them share the same building/resources and communicate with each other more effectively.

Yes, I'd agree with that. Just use plain common sense regarding the quangos, merge several of them doing the same job and you could save a small fortune.

AFAIK, Labour's policy was to do what the Canadians did where each Quango has to justify its existence and those who couldn't do so to a decent extent were axed.
Not a bad system as it puts the onus on the quangos to show why they're needed.
