Laying garden patio

I'm planning to dig out a portion of the garden and must go down 4-5inches before my uncle comes to lay the patio. Donkey work must be done first ! Can anyone recommend a tool to assist in this job rather than using a pick-axe and shovel. Surely there is some tool hire place that can save me ???

How big is the area?

If the ground is hard then a kango hammer with a 4" or 6" wide blade bit can be used to cut the sod down to the required level, once u open the first trench then it gets easier
