You should probably stick a poll in or its pretty much a direct replica of the other thread. For me, fast paced attacking football, which usually ends up being end to end.

    Rubbish goalkeepers.

Also, this poll is going to be quite one sided ironically enough.

For all their detractors, Stoke were a joy to watch in the Cup last week.

Even games, love seeing end to end games

Any game involving Stoke, an absolutely 'engrossing' side by all accounts..

They were also excellent on Tuesday night, I chose that game over the United/Schalke one.

End to end gun-ho attacking football is the most entertaining, however this is not feasible for consistently successful teams so the ability for one team to constantly outplay others is what I prefer. Really the mark of a great team when they have the ability to play most teams off the park every week.

Even matches all round but if its gonna be one sided then I like it served up ala Barca style with some panache.

Think there's a lot of over reaction on boards tonight over the earlier match.
Huge audience for earlier match obviously. Id watch fair few of their la liga games but tonight was a bad 'characeture' of the ugly side of both teams.

    Even in a neutral game.
One-sided in a United or Rovers game. As long as said side is leaning towards United or Rovers.:P

    I'd prefer to watch a 22-man brawl than a one-sided game, if I'm honest.

Any game in which Kevin Keegan is managing a team. :D

Got to love the 'you score three, we'll score four' mentality.

As a supporter, I just want the job done in any way.

    As a neutral:

4-3 with winning goal in added time.

    Player(s) sent off.

Manager in trouble with lino or referee,

    Trouble in the crowd.

Who enjoys one sided games that dont involve their own team ?

I love high scoring end to end games when both teams just forget defending and look to outscore each other. Couple that with old school blood, guts and passionate EPL footie (with an old school ref) and you have the perfect game.

I enjoy watching players with real obvious passion for the game, who love playing the game.

Watching a bunch of nancy boys (like el classico) jump around the pitch, chase the ref and square up to each other (with no intentions of doing anything other then look tough) is disgusting, boring and just downright embarrasing.

The United-Schalke game was considerably more one sided than last nights match.

Your poll is designed to attract votes which agree with your own opinion, have you considered joining Fianna Fail?

I think this will prove to be a classic case of people saying one thing and doing another.

Television ratings show that people will watch one sided games more than evenly matched games.

I think a perfect illustration of this is La Liga on Sky Sports for their British audience (where there would be relatively fewer "fans" watching out of alliegence, etc)

You will find more people watching Real or Barca against weaker opposition, than you would two evenly matched teams playing each other.

I dont agree with that statement. People watch Barca and madrid games because they are Barca and Madrid, not because they want to see canon fodder being destroyed!

But that's kind of my point though, as seeing weaker teams beaten is an unavoidable consequence of wanting to watch the best teams do their thing. Save for the classico, you will only ever see these teams play weaker (and in most cases FAR weaker opposition), whereupon you see them do what makes them Barca and Madrid, i.e., play the some of the best football in the game today.

Neutrals want an evenly matched open game.

Fans want a demolition one sided game.

Any fan, of any team, anywhere in the world, would cream themselves if their team played that way and dominated.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,154 ✭✭✭✭Neil3030

Neutrals want an evenly matched open game.

Again, I'd say neutrals don't want an even match, they want to watch the best football/teams.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'd wager Shamrock Rover's biggest ever home attendance since moving to Tallaght was their friendly against Real Madrid. Plenty of "even matches" have been played in the ground since - where were all these neutrals?

The Real match finished 1 nil with Real stealing a late winner. Hardly a procession.

Ok. To re-explain more clealy, only cos we're namesakes!

I follow EPL and La Liga. I could give 2 f**ks about Rovers so the only time I'd have any interest would be if a big European team were in.

However, if I were to tune into, let's say, the Bundesliga, I'd rather watch Dortmund vs Bayern than see Bayern vs St Pauli.

They don't want an even match in the sense of Wolves vs Wigan, they want top level in the United vs Chelsea realm. But neutrals want to see a contest.

One team dominating will bore the neutrals. See the Scheuemacher era in F1, Sampras era etc. People want to see competition, not dominance. Unless they're Schuey/Sampras fans!

I imagine games between Real and Barca have far higher viewing figures than games against Las Palmas etc primarily because people want to watch an evenly matched game between the 2 best teams in Spain.

    Newcastle 4 - 4 Arsenal

    Now that was entertainment.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,289 ✭✭✭parker kent

I don't really want to answer the poll as I find all sorts of games entertaining. I can't really split a 4-3 ding-dong from a game between 2 top teams that may only have 1 goal.

Then there are games like the 5-0 Barca demolition of Real Madrid that are fantastic to watch because they were so thrillingly awesome. But I also have seen Championship games, LOI games etc that were entertaining for all sorts of other reasons.

Ok. I thought you meant that most neutrals want to watch uneven games.

I think most neutrals do want to watch good even games. What you speak of is actually that people will not watch games that arent involving big teams , which is slightly differant as if people know that two exciting teams (that arent top notch) will be playing, they will be more inclined to watch the game (even if there isnt as much interest in it).

I think of the Liverpool v Newcastle games of the 90s when they were nearly always 4-3. Granted Newcastle were up near the top, they were hardly a world class team. They were exciting. People knew they were going to get to see some exciting stuff. Like watching a blackpool game at the moment. I would watch them cause I know there will be goals goals goals.

Now think of relegation games. The closer it gets to the end of the season, the more people will watch games between teams fighting to stay up.

So I agree and disagree in bits. Neutrals will watch games that they think will be interesting. If its not their own team, they will default to the teams and players they know or a game between two teams that interests them for other reasons (rivalry/goals potential /relegation etc).

Exactly! People only want to see a contest, once good teams are involved. Once there is/are a good team(s) involved, only then does the question of whether the teams are evenly matched come into play. The "good team(s)" criterion must be satisfied first.

To suggest people seek evenly matched games, in context free terms, is therefore nonsense.

I dont agree with your bolded bit unless of course you can define good teams.

If there was United v Liverpool on the final day of the season in a game that counted for nothing and a relegation game between 4 of the potential 3 teams to be relegated I know which games most neutrals would watch.

There are more variables involved in watching a game then simply status of a club or potential closeness of a game. I would be more likely to watch a Blackpool v Blackburn game if I thought there was going to be loads of goals then say a Chelsea v Blackburn game. However, as a United fan I would watch the Chelsea game to keep an eye on your rivals. Again, in terms of bigger clubs watching figures, this has to be included. You are not a neutral if you are watching a game in which you want one team to lose to benefit your team.

Sitting on their barstools, as you correctly predicted. But thats not really the topic in hand. We know that people will come along to see glamour friendlies, thats why they are done. But the neutral crowd that day were cheering equally as much for Rovers - it was a day out.

I think both can be equally entertaining.

Was at Maine Road in the last season they played there, for our match against City, which was a completely one sided match, was one of the best performances I can recall Arsenal putting in, Bergkamp, Henry and Pires were out of this world. We were all seated in a temporary stand in the corner of the ground, City supporters started leaving early but they had to walk in front of us, each and every one of them applauded us as they left.

Have also watched some great matches against utd and spurs in which it was end to end stuff and equally as enjoying.
