Same 'ol story, looking for camera, sick of P & S but can't afford a high end DSLR. Looking through Argos I found this

    http://www.argos.ie/static/Product/partNumber/5593189/Trail/searchtext%3ENIKON.htm

I know I won't be able to afford lens down the road so would I be better off with something like a Coolpix? Just looking for standard photos, baby etc but would like to get into it more but would the lack of lenses hold me back?

not too good to be true, just last years camera. its fine and will take magazine quality photos if you know how to use it.
as for lenses, standard answer is to get a nifty fifty (50mm f1.8) which is about the cheapest lens available. its also an absolutely amazing portrait lens.
I got mine in perfect nick on adverts for less than a hundred. kit lens will be fine for about a years learning

Thanks Mawk, not too bothered it's last years. I'm sure the other cameras won't laugh at him for wearing last years lens. Time to have a think...

    That 50mm/1.8 won't autofocus on the D3000.

by the time she decides to upgrade, she can get the nikkor af-s 50, that will work fine.

    Snap that up. Good price.

The Nikon Kit Lenses are quite good, so you will be right with it to get started.

yep, it's a bit more expensive, but the 35mmf1.8 is a better choice anyway.

nikon have just announced a 50mm 1.8 G lens some nice sample pics http://www.flickr.com/photos/phantomas/5660705610/

of the available primes at the moment I would definitely go for the 35mm DX 1.8 though.
