What to look for in old X5's??

Mate of mine's old E36 is getting on in years, and he's currently mulling over X5's. He does a good bit of towing, wants a high spec interior, and is looking for the ~€10k - €15k range....what are people's views? Are 2004 - 2006's reliable? Petrol or Diesel? Are there any specific models he should be looking at e.g. SE or…

Turbo's can give trouble in the 3 litre diesels if not serviced right. watch out for black smoke on those.
