finally, my turn to have one of these threads :D

a guy from work has made me a rather good offer on my car, and i think i'm going to accept providing i can find something else i like more than my car, which at the moment i'm finding a bit difficult. but i would quite like a change too, so hopefully this all goes well.

currently driving my 2001 Vitz RS, so i want to go not necessarily bigger but definitely better than that.

i'm pretty much open to anything really, providing its something a bit different in the same way as the Vitz. absolutely not interested in civics, glanzas, and VAG TDi carry on or the usual suspects.

    the criteria

    - 4500 euro to spend on the car and 6 months tax.
    - preferably a chain driven engine
    - i definitely rank reliability over appearance
    - must have a bit of 'poke' but doesn't need to be a ferrari
    - currently i'm doing a very small mileage, but come September i'l be doing 350+ miles a week so maybe a diesel is the man for the job
    - i'm soon to be 21 with 4 years no claims, license holder for 4 years, 3.5 of those a full license, so insurance is still a constraint.

thats about it, tricky criteria i know but do your worst :)

You say you may want a diesel but dismiss the VAG TDi (any of them) immediately? Best 'O luck pal.

pretty much yeah, they are gaining a certain image (felt spec i think they call it), and i think insurance would be tough on them given my age and the fact they are fast becoming the tossers car of choice.

plenty of other manufacturers do diesels, and i'm after something a little less stereotypical for my age group than a golf/ bora/ passat done to death stuff.

    diesel avensis

    diesel E class perhaps

i think i have a few options within my budget, just brainstorming for ideas at the moment. nothing is set in stone, i'm not too sure what i do want, i'm only sure of what i don't, hence the thread :).

I know it's VAG but pretty rare still. How about a Mark 1 Fabia RS? should find a minter for your budget.

Or an Ibiza Cupra PD160? I don't think I've ever seen one in the Republic of Ireland.

If you think the Vitz is different and interesting, then I suggest that you buy an exciting Yaris diesel.

I don't imagine it'll have "a bit of poke", but I believe it was previously owned by Mr. Quirky McQuirkerson from Quirkeston, Quirkeyville.

    Quirke-mobile!

He prolly wont pay the tax on that after getting comfortable with the Vitz. But it is a good suggestion.

    I've got it!

    Smart ForFour 1.5 diesel
    Quirky
    Small
    Odd
    Economical

    It's basically a colt underneath

A colt cz3 with the same engine would also be worth a shot if you're into that kind of thing.

i think the vitz is different, not very often you see an RS, lots of kit and looks a bit smart, and its a 1.5 so has a small amount of go.

and for those of you who asked what it is

some interesting replies in this thread, a big saab might well be an option aswell, are the 156's in 1.9 form any good? i know alfa's reliability in general is questionable but the 2.4 is a rarity i'd imagine.

nissan cube is one i never considered and is a potential contender alright, although its a bit of a mammywagon, going to have to rule out the figaro and forfour though, just too 'quirky' lol :D

i think i'l spend the evening scouring the sites and see what i turn up :pac:

'twas only when you posted the pics I realised it was you, must pay more attention to the usernames. Luckily I didn't mention earlier that another boardie motors regular has one too :D
