i'v an 01 polo 1.0L its overheating, there's no water spillage and plenty in the system! the thermostat stays around half way but sometimes goes up full or drops to zero! and the overheating light flashes, and hot air comes out of the blowers, having it on hot and full blast seems to keep the temp needle steadish at halfway? any ideas what this could be?? thermostat? waterpump?

It could be a faulty temperature sensor.

Do not take my advice for certain but id say its the radiator fan not working.

i just tried the thermostat test in boiling water and it had no effect to the thermostat so my instincts are telling me its that right now. i'm gonna change that and see how that goes, any other help would be great, thanks for the replies

Does your car have the thermostat built into the plastic housing? If so the plastic piece that retains the thermostat plunger(look in through the water outlet from the plastic housing) normally breaks so the thermostat can't open.
