Music streaming service Grooveshark (along the lines of Spotify but can be used legally in Ireland) is currently offering a $20 per-year subscription to it's premium (mobile and ad-free) service whereby all proceeds will go to Red Cross Japan.

AFAIK it's usually a $9 per month subscription so this is quite a reduction, not to mention for a very good cause. The premium service means you won't get any ads on the side of your screen (great for me as I use a netbook and have limited screen space) and even better, you'll get to use the mobile service, which includes the option to download tracks while you're at home and listen to them to offline when out of the house.

http://www.grooveshark.com for the site itself, http://www.storenvy.com/products/72750-japan-relief-year-gsa is the link for the purchase.

Unlike Spotify though, Grooveshark pay no royalties to any artist. Read more here. I would just give the money straight to the charity...

Bought - loved the Grooveshark iPhone app when it was in free (beta), well worth $20 for the year. (Note: seems that Apple pulled the app, it's available on Cydia but you have to be jailbroken)

@smackyB I don't expect to pay the artists, I'm paying for a service. When I want to pay the artist, I'll go to a concert. By the way, artists don't get paid royalties for plays, that's what writers get. Artists only get paid royalties on sales.

With the dollar as it is $20 translates to around €13-14 depending on how your credit card company apply extra charges for currency conversion etc.Excellent deal.

Have other people got their code immediately or have you had to wait for it?

Grooveshark is a brilliant service, and a great price for a year's mobile subscription. But is the App available on any mobile platform anymore? I know it is still on the Palm Pre, but I believe Google pulled it from the Android Store, and as mentioned above is only available on the iPhone through Jailbreaking it. It's also worth noting that not all the songs on Grooveshark are available on their mobile App.

Grooveshark is one of the worst looking interfaces I've ever used.
I was subscribed to them for a while but you don't really get any bang for your buck unless your mobile is supported. For a free service though you can't complain but I'd be with spotify if I could

    Just signed up, thanks OP!
For the sake of €14 I'll try it out for the year. The iPhone app looks cool too so I'll definitely use that.

It seems like there isn't as good a selection on the mobile app. For 14 quid it's good but if you're getting it solely to use on a mobile device maybe think twice.

On android there's an app for Grooveshark called Tinyshark that is completely free and works perfectly.

The official android app is next to useless. I generally don't use playlists and they don't allow you to access your full music library. Even the songs you save for offline playing are liable to disappear randomly.

You can easily get rid of the ads in the html5 player and the only real benefit of the paid for player is its ability to scrobble to last.fm.

It could be a great service but it ruined by amateur developers tbh.

It works like Youtube apparently. Removals are done on request and many labels have deals in place for royalties.

The Android app is available on the groveshark site apparently. Had no idea about the iphone app.

Yeah it's not perfect but I reckon I'll use it most days since spotify isn't available.

True. I've been using it quite a bit but the Grooveshark app is much better IMHO. Tinyshark has also stopped working for various periods. There's also no offline mode and it can't handle it when you use your phone for other things at the same time, like texting.

They just released a new android player with the ability to view your whole music library :D. I think my rant may have been a little too early :o
