Just wondering what the recording quality is like on these. SD and HD. I just remember transferring miniDV to laptop before needing FireWire as USB wasn't up to speed. Or was that that just a USB 1.0 problem??

The recording is an exact copy of the transmission stream (assuming signal quality is OK). There should be no problems with handing high bitrates as they are all USB 2. However, it's advisable not to use USB sticks for HD material as the write process is too slow on solid state.

Will RTE eventually be putting copy protection on HD?

    Long answer:
Ask RTÉ. The copy protection used in the UK on Freesat HD can be got around using a FTA PVR or putting a Freesat PVR into non-freesat mode. The 'copy protection' proposed for UK Freeview HD is just the encoding of the EPG - the programme stream is still unencrypted.

Short answer: not any that can't be got around
