    Hi
I'm newish to road cycling and looking to get a van nicholas euros.
I have a 50cm(M) 2010 merida hfs 904 for last 2 months and feels ok
(some lower back pain the odd time but just getting used to position)

From the frame size calculator on their site my frame size works out at 50.92cm .
When i choose a 52cm fame it gives me a 10.4 cm stem length ,
    and when I choose a 50cm it gives a 11.5 cm stem length .

My question is sould you generally go smaller or larger if inbetween frame sizes ?

    web site calculator : http://www.vannicholas.com/framesizingsteps.aspx
    My measurements :
    height: 167cm
    inseam: 76cm
    thigh: 33cm
    torso: 56cm
    arm length: 63cm
    shoulder 41cm.

    Cheers - Paul

Personally i'd always go smaller, u can easily get a longer stem and rise up your saddle to suit, plus the smaller the frame the more stiff it is in theory anyway.

I've currently got a 54 but seriously thinking of getting a 52 next time cos the top tube is a bit long for me and i need a very small stem on it.

    Hi Zorba
Thanks for the reply and advise.
I just got an email back from van nicholas asvising to get the 52cm due to stem length so it 1 for 1 at the moment - and still undecided.

I'd stick with your current bike until you are 110% comfortable on it, or if not know exactly what needs changing to get there. If you have only just started why are you looking to replace your bike already?

    Pob1,
Watch out for what I call toeverlap - that is when your toe rubs the wheel (while turning) when your foot is in the 3:00 position.

It is not a major deal breaker, but is something to consider when down sizing.

Smaller isn't always better. Go to a few shops and sit on some rides. See what feels best and make a note of the specifics: frame size, stem size/angle, and all.

    A 76cm inseam, that's right around the 52cm mark.

Is there a difference in geometry when you go from the 52 to the 50cm?
