New Shot Putt Star - to young for worlds?

New Zealand have a new Shot Putt star. Jacko Gill recently became the youngest person ever to break the 20m barrier with a senior shot weight. The young Kiwi broke the National record with a throw of 20.01m.

While the IAAF do allow athlese of 16 and 17 to compete in WC however the rules for the world championships in Daegu in August state that any athlete aged 16 or 17 years on December 31, 2011, may compete in any event except the men's throws, decathlon, 10,000m, marathon and race walks.

I can see the logic in terms of a safety aspect of an child development by discouraging attempts on the qualifications however given than other events allow qualification it seems a little unfair on the athlete

Thats absolutely astonishing. 20 metres at that age is crazy!

That's a staggering performances, it really is. And if you look at a pic of this guy, for example http://www.iaaf.org/WYC11/news/newsid=59843.html there's not a spare ounce of flesh on him. It's all conditioning and (clearly) technique.

Personally I think it's a bad idea to mix young juniors with the men. I'm not sure Irish or GB regs would have allowed him to throw the 7.26 in competition. He's putting an awful amount of stress onto his body.

I'd tend to agree with that.

Didn't some junior from Argentina throw an astonishing 80m + throw in the Javelin last year or did I dream that?

    EDIT:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Braian_Toledo

As a youth he threw the 700g Javelin 89.34m, 6 metres better than the previous World Youth Best. He has thrown 73m for the full 800g Javelin already. Looks like an awesome talent.
