Squeak squeak

    Evening all,

Am having a slight problem with my bike at the moment. There is an extremely annoying squeak emanating from the pedal/chain-ring/bb area of the bike.

I have taken the pedals off and re-greased them and had thought that had sorted the problem. The frist hour & a half of mt spin on Sunday was blissfully squeak free but then back it came.

The cranks are spinning perfectly smoothly so I don't think its an issue with the bb. There no unwanted side to side movement in the cranks and the bb seems tight.

I dropped into Joe Daly's and was advised taking the cranks & chain-wheals off and re-greasing them.

I know this is all a little vague but has anyone had similar problems and managed to resolve them.

    Thanks in advance,
    S.

My bike had an annoying squeak recently which was caused by a noisy rear mech pulley wheel. Needed a good shot of oil to get rid of it.

    Maybe the saddle ?

Had a similar squeak in the past and was 100% sure it was from the same area but turned out to be the saddle

Was just going to say that. During my first cycle on my new bike a week ago I got a similar squeak half way through, all sorts of causes were going through my mind but I eventually figured out it was the saddle.

    Not the saddle, just checked.

    Any other ideas???

Did you try taking the chain rings off as suggested? I once fixed a squeak doing that. It is very difficult to figure out noises on a bike though, they can be from somewhere other than you expect. Try to diagnose, does it happen when you are standing/sitting, pedalling/freewheeling, holding the bars/not holding the bars, etc. Stem/bar interface is another common one although it is generally obvious and unlikely if you think it is around the BB.From your description though rear hub/cassette would also be a possibility.

Pretty much all squeeks and clicks seem to be coming from the crank regardless of where they are coming from. Couple of things:

When you stand up is it gone? If so its your saddle most likely.
When its happening take your hands off the bars. Does it stop? If so then you may need to tighten in that area (that was my squeek last season)
Is it regular as clockwork i.e. each time you push down with your right foot? Then you may need to do as you were advised and take the chain rings off.

Thanks all. Have ruled out saddle as the cause. Have removed the chainrings but am wondering should I apply some grease before re-fitting? Will this not cause it to come loose while riding?

Grease will not cause them to come loose, no. You should grease basically all threaded fasteners on a bike. I grease my own chainring bolts and never an issue.

Thats great, thanks. Will reassemble this evening with grease then.

I know that you've ruled out the saddle, but how about the seat-post?

I had a creak last week on the mtb, and for the life of me I couldn't find it. I thought it was the bb first, then the saddle. Turned out that a small bit of grease between seat-tube and seat-post sorted it out. Quiet as a mouse now!

Don't think this is the problem as the squeak is there when out of the saddle. That said, will check this this evening too. Thanks.

You have got to get this fixed, how are you supposed to hide behind someone when there is a headwind, At least for all the people that you cycle with, I was out yesterday and for 25 of the 50k there was a squeaker on my tail! ;)

Had a similar problem, tried everything, seat post, bars / stem, saddle rails, cranks / chainrings, pedals. I was driving me mad.
Finally, my wife who sat beside the bike as I jumped around on it said its coming from the rear wheel. Impossible I said, but I took out the wheels, cleaned the contact points between the hubs and frame and lo the squeak was gone.

    Found out, doh!

Just spent the last hour taking off, cleaning, greasing & reassembling chainrings & cranks. Went for short spin around a seems to have sorted it. Will know for sure after longer spin tomorrow evening.

    Thanks all for your input.
