Just looking at getting to Northumberland coast, not far north of Newcastle in mid September. Google maps seems to think its better to take a ferry from northern Ireland but its hard to figure out which one. Troon looks handier but does the P&O ferry stop in Cairnryan on the way there? Shorter journey time is probably better as we'd be hoping to get to east coast for that night and belfast / larne is about 3hrs from here

    They are separate ferries.

It depends where you are actually going, but you may want to take the Troon route on Google Maps with a pinch of salt if it takes you via Glasgow as the motorway goes through Glasgow and can be very slow at peak times.

Also you may want to investigate Stena Line's Belfast to Stranraer route. Won't be any faster, but may be cheaper.
