I don't understand how our society has allowed this horrible form of communication to fester. Whatever about the hip kids SO MANY ADS OR TXTS OR CHATS from people online/mobile phones are done through typing full sentences in CAPS or lk dis ya knw like from supposedly ''well educated'' adults.

Have since defriended someone today for this henious crime from my facebook page for constantly posting this annoying spew. This happen to anyone else where someone got so annoying when they sent txt messages to you you resorted to blocking them out of your life? :D

When I'm texting I find it quicker to type use predictive text and spell the words properly rather than going to the hassle of typing out that drivel.

There was a text speak posting left in my wifes facebook page last night and we failed to read it but she did not defriend him

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,800 ✭✭✭Aishae

oh i loathe... loathe that sh*te... i used to shorten things a bit on the phone, i know you get bigger text space these days but even so, if you go over space the phone just sends 2 messages instead. i aint paying for two when a bit of vowel editing shall do.

and a bit or 'lol' is the cornerstone of expressing one's laughs.

but that sh*te kids talk these days.... its mostly kids on my FB that do it (by kids i mean 14-25) - there were a few 30+ folks i knew that would express their hangovers and talk about fast birds and hot cars in this strange effed up language.... i just ignored it. hard to miss the drivel my cousins post all the time - especially now facebook is mobile.
my mam was saying they'll have forgotten how to spell in a few years - most of them actually do seem to have a bit of trouble with english these days.

murdering the english language, i wont start lolspeak or l33ting. im stubborn like that

now that you mention it in a roundabout kind of way - that kind of speak can end up sounding so desperate and strangely girly or over cutesy.....

It's ironic that what is meant to be a shortened form of writing can take longer to read because it can be so fcuking difficult to decipher:mad:

I can sort of understand dropping vowels and silent letters in texts where space is limited, but it drives me mental when people add letters to words. A couple of years ago, there was an obsession with spelling "you" as "yooh" or "yhoo" and it made me want to stop being friends with the people who wrote it!

Also, spelling "my" as "mah" and things like that. It just defeats the purpose!

i can honestly say i cant make out what the hell theyre saying most of the time. maybe i could if i spent 5 mins on it. but... 5 mins on a small sentence?

a bit of editing is one thing but... thats abbreviating not slaughtering the language

sounds rather snobbish - the way the upper classes in bygone eras spoke all 'proper' yhoo

The reason it is so hard to understand what they say is because the first and last letters of the word are not in the correct place.

Copied the following for you all to read.

Take a look at this paragraph. Can you read what it says? All the letters have been jumbled (mixed). Only the first and last letter of ecah word is in the right place:
I cnduo't bvleiee taht I culod aulaclty uesdtannrd waht I was rdnaieg. Unisg the icndeblire pweor of the hmuan mnid, aocdcrnig to rseecrah at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it dseno't mttaer in waht oderr the lterets in a wrod are, the olny irpoamtnt tihng is taht the frsit and lsat ltteer be in the rhgit pclae. The rset can be a taotl mses and you can sitll raed it whoutit a pboerlm. Tihs is bucseae the huamn mnid deos not raed ervey ltteer by istlef, but the wrod as a wlohe. Aaznmig, huh? Yaeh and I awlyas tghhuot slelinpg was ipmorantt! See if yuor fdreins can raed tihs too.

When people use text speak they sometimes write 'time as tym' and stuff like that so they're breaking the basic rule and making it very very hard to understand.

My absolute pet hate is people who seem to think it is appropriate to have changed the word 'it' to 'eh'...............why oh why??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,674 ✭✭✭Dangerous Man

I said it before, and I'll say it again - if rats could write, they'd do so in text speak. It's disgusting, tramp behaviour. I don't mind bad grammar or a psychotic refusal to acknowledge the existence of paragraphs - but I can't abide text speak. Niggardly behaviour. Disgraceful.

The problem there is that they can't pronounce 'it'. 'Eh' took me a few seconds to realise that I needed to say 'eh' in a thick Dublin accent for that to make sense.

Soon, linguists will start researching it as a language that emerged from local dialects and spread through modern communication, and it'll be taught in schools. Then us old farts will be left unable to read road signs, crashing into each other instead of ylding ryt f whey and ending up in Galway instead of Tllamoor.

Language evolves. We might not like it but our generation will be irrelevant in 30 years time. Who knows what the language will look like when the youth of today are running the show! Some comments here strike me as the height of snobbishness!!

I don't know if you read my post but the point I was trying to make was that 'txt spk' for example can be read easily but lately the extent of the text speak has really deteriorated and become very exaggerated to be something that our brains have trouble reading.

It is not snobbery at all!!

its true - txt spk first came about to assist sending longer text messages. people started using it on the net to save time when typing (or so it seemed) then kids really got on the bandwagon of this 'cool language' - and over time they AND adults have slaughtered txt spk - it seems to be so that they sound cool or fit in.

Evolution I'm fine with, but textspeak is devolution. If that makes me a snob then I'm quite happy with my snobbishness.

It's a shortcut we all use shortcuts ... In life on the road on your pc.... I personally think that you were not true friends in the first place if you can 'defriend' someone on the basis of using text talk .. Shallow.. Could you not have taken the time to explain to the person that you prefer your chats / messages to be fully typed??

true (ive never defriended someone over txt spk, l33t, lolspeak) but i wouldnt call the modern text spk a short cut - take one of the words 'skewel' the same amount of letters as school. i find its the same with most of the new spelling. and it also takes longer to figure out.

i wouldnt tell someone off for writing like that on their facebook status - its their status after all. but i'd like to be able to understand what they were on about.

Clearly, yes they do. Being honest its only a fairly minor inconvenience to me as I rarely come across text speak anymore thanks to predictive text.

Also considering that text speak is banned in just about every charter that I have read on boards, I think its fair to say that yeah, plenty of people do give a shite. :pac:
