I'm thinking of starting up my own company (Media Company, iPhone, WP7 & Android games and apps) at the end of May and I'm currently writing up a business plan. I was just wondering if anybody here has gone through the BTEA starting up a business? I have a few questions about starting up and was wondering if anybody would know. Also if you have any advice on going through BTEA, or just starting up in general it would be greatly appreciated! :)

Are the grant available to you on the BTEA easily obtained once you have got the go-ahead from your local partnership?

Is it worth renting out incubation space to start your own company? Rent would be the biggest expense annually by far. It triples even my full software costs.

If I get office space, would it be worth signing up to the 'FÁS WPP' for potential employee's if I'm the only other person working there? (I'm not too sure about this as it said you need 1 employee on the payroll and it is kind of like getting free labor :o )

Have you looked into getting space with your local enterprise center? There prices are quite reasonable so iv heard

Yup, I've looked into my local centre and also the digital hub. The cost of renting incubation space, even at the lowest priced rent in them (€45 a week) would be my highest annual cost. I would ideally like to get an office space as working from home can be tedious.

You do need to have at minimum one person on the payroll for this, which could be you as a director depending on how you're setting up the business. It is a great scheme, especially to give you a chance to get used to having an employee and building towards taking them on full time at the end of the placement. It is "free labour" for you, but mutually beneficial to the candidate as they get to keep their full entitlements if stamps are about to run out and the assumption would be that there is a job at the end of the placement for them.
