Been doing a little digging and managed to come up with a few of the stadium records. Many of which suprised me being from the younger generation. Do people think we will ever see any of them broken?

    200m
    20.30 +0.1 Paul Hession IRL 21.07.2007

    800m
    1:45.98 Dmitriy Bogdanov RUS 29.07.2000

    1 mile
    3:52.0 John Walker NZL 11.07.1977

    3000m
    7:45.61 John Ngugi KEN 22.07.1989

    5000m
    13:20.99 Eamonn Coghlan IRL 27.08.1980

    10,000m
    27:57.7 Carlos Lopes POR 04.07.1982

    Womens

    5000m
    15:20.16 Sonia O'Sullivan IRL 26.07.1998

    10,000m
    31:19.11 Catherina McKiernan IRL 12.06.1994

    20,000m Walk
1:28:06 Susana Feitor POR Dublin 16.06.2001

    Hammer
    73.21m Eileen O'Keefe IRL 21.07.2007

If anyone has anymore feel free to add. Do we think that we will ever get top quality meets as used to be on in the 70s/80s on these shores again. Wonder also how these would compare to the likes of Cork City Sports times?

Great stats ecoli. From where we are it's difficult to see how the Morton will attract the top internationals in the forseeable future. That is, unless some T&F enthusiast puts up the money. Any professional athlete worth his/her salt these days is chasing the money on the Grand Prix circuit, not flogging over to rainy old Dublin.

Ireland's interest in top class athletics was shown in the Morton Mile meet in 2008. A passable crowd turned out but the media totally ignored the whole thing. That won't get sponsors queuing up to support future events. I've still got my free 'Brother' peaked cap from that night :)

It's a long haul but Irish athletes need to be seen on the world stage consistently, then the young ones will try to follow their lead and the rest will follow. It can be done if the will is there.

It would need a current Irish Olympic champion or world record holder to decide to organise an invitational event to get anyone else over I reckon.

Its a pity that bigger effort wasnt made this year to try get something going in terms of the build up to the OG next year this would have been an ideal year to set up a race and hopefully entice some top quality talent with the similarities in climate between here and london though i suppose that is what the DL races in England this year will provide But even given English tax laws creates a unique potential of a race here rather than in England for alot of runners

Good point about the tax rules putting people off wanting to race in the UK. The 2012 games is was a fantastic opportunity for Ireland to generate some extra interest in various sports. The boat has been missed on that one though.

I'm quite amazed that there seems to have been no effort made by NGBs to attract competing nations to use the country as a base for 2012. (I could be wrong - maybe there are concerted efforts behind the scenes.) It's an ideal location for a training base for the 2-3 weeks beforehand before heading off for London.

Dont forget Herb Elliott's world record in 1958 for the mile, 3:54 05, first time five athletes broke 4 minutes in a race.

(I'm sure it has been broken many times since, thought I'd mention it)

2 and 3 mile WR were also broken that night IIRC was going to put them in along with alot of other notable performances but thought the stadium records would highlight the point

Yes the only international teams that I've heard of coming here to prepare are the British and Hungarian water polo teams and the US synchronised swimming team so it seems Swim Ireland are the only NGB making any sort of an effort. There could be others that I haven't heard tell of but on the whole its a very poor effort. As soon as the London Games were announced a plan should have been put in straight away that would entice international teams to come here to prepare prior to the Games which would have provided benefits in terms of both revenue generated and improved facilities as a legacy

Will our own team even be based here?

How many proper sized swimming pools did Ireland suddenly get?

Although I guess it doesn't need to be a full sized one for doing water polo and syncro training.
