This was on earlier today so if you missed it like me...

Cameraman: The Life and Work of Jack Cardiff(Documentary,2010)
    Film4
    Wednesday, April 27th, 2011
    1:30pm to 3:10pm

Part of the Films for Life season. Craig McCall's documentary charts the career of the superlative British cinematographer who died in 2009. Jack Cardiff's involvement in the medium began in the silent era as an actor, aged just four. His on-screen career was short, but he switched behind the camera in 1935 and went on to become one of the most respected purveyors of his trade in the history of cinema. Films he lent his magic to include A Matter of Life and Death, The Red Shoes, The African Queen, The Prince and the Showgirl, The Vikings and Death on the Nile, right through to Conan the Destroyer and Rambo: First Blood Part II. He won two Oscars: the first for work on 1947's Black Narcissus, the second an honorary Lifetime Achievement award in 2001. His story is told through interviews with the man himself and those who worked with and admired him, including Martin Scorsese, Kirk Douglas, Lauren Bacall, Charlton Heston, John Mills and Alan Parker. Edited for language.

Why doesn't Film Four have more stuff like this on? Beats yet another screening of 9 Weeks or Scream any day of the week.

Thanks for the heads-up. I missed it today as well, good to know it's been repeated

Nearly flipping forgot, only saw the last hour or so, excellent. Some of the tricks and techniques used in his work for the Powell/Pressburger films were astonishing. Off to do some Jack Cardiff reading.

Saw this today even though I'm not a proper cinephile.

    It was good.

Its also on Netflix US, he was a proper analogue filmmaker, that reveal of Niven's character at the beach, supposedly when the fog lifts, where he just had an assistant breath on the lens and let it clear is just lovely! A Matter of Life And Death is a must see for any proper film fan and HUGELY enjoyable!

Also a good director including one made in Dublin, Young Cassidy.
