What's wrong with my iphone4?

I picked up my iphone this morning and it had a msg on the screen saying that there was an error and I had to reset the phone using itunes and that I couldn't make or receive calls until I did(sorry can't remember the exact wording). So I did that and itunes told me the phone was successfully restored and that when my phone starts up it will appear in itune. Only the phone won't start up now. The apple logo appears for about 5 secs, then the screen goes black and this happens over and over. When I plug it into my charger it starts up but tells me I need to install itunes. I unplug it from the charger and it turns off. It won't turn on when I hit the power button.

Has anyone any ideas what I can do? If I return it to apple do I have to know the IMEI number? I can't find the box and when I plug it into the charger and it turns on and I press the info button it tells me the IMEI is unknown.

Sorry if I've explained it bad, I don't know much about iphones.

Put the phone into DFU mode by following these steps, it sounds as if they o/s did not load correctly the first time, by following these steps with put the phone in a recovery mode and will start the setup as if you've just taken it out of the box.

    Connect the phone to itunes
Press and hold home and power buttons for 10 secs
Release the power button, keep pressing home button
iTunes should display a message about recovery mode
Follow the rest of the steps on screen and the phone will be restored to factory settings

    Its not a virus.

OP, have you tried holding the power and home buttons at the same time until the phone restarts (about 15-20 seconds)? If that doesn't work by itself, try doing the restore in a new user account on this computer (it will be a clean iTunes copy as far as settings and the restore file are concerned) or on a second computer and see if this will work.

If that doesn't fix it, give Apple a call. You will be able to get the serial (preferred) or IMEI numbers by hovering the mouse over the lastest backup listed in iTunes > Edit > Preferences > Devices.

Try on a different pc. It may be that the software update didn't download correctly and that's what's causing the issue
