Looking for a band to play Downstairs at Whelans

    Hey folks,

I have a Friday night gig in May, and need a third band for the gig...

We have a few options, so this may not actually happen, but for the right band it'll DEF happen. (Hope that makes sense.)

I don't wanna give away too many details, but can say that you will be expected to promote and draw a bit of a crowd.

I am NOT a promoter. My band has the night and one of the bands on the bill fell through.

We're going for "cheap and packed" so that we can simply cover the cost of the venue hire (which we fronted and need to recoup), but if you can guarantee a couple hundred folks would pay 7-8 euro to see you, you will make money off the gig. If you see my point.

    I'll happily answer questions.

I have done this semi-anonymously as to stop folks from thinking I'm trying to promote. If you DM me I'll happily tell you what other bands are on the bill though. Just trying to keep this professional.

The basic "sound" of the evening is "indie" I suppose, but I'm genuinely open to all offers.

    Basically looking for either:

    - good band for the night (cheap and packed route)
    - good/popular band for the night (packed and they'll make some cash route)

    If anything is unclear, ask.

    don't freak out folks.

basically a band that can bring in a huge paying crowd allows my band to play for 200 strangers... in exchange they keep the door - venue booking fee... that's the arrangement we had with another band which had to cancel due to a last minute festival slot...

    So...

Big band, lots of new people see us, we trade that for the money made.

Option B - We fill it ourselves (which we can) but don't get to play to a lot of strangers and just charge v little to guarantee it's full and cover costs.

    see?

Ah, thats a bit different alright. Looked like you expected to get another band to fill the place and reap the benifits from your first post :D Thats fair enough tho.

So basically you're looking to do a support slot for a popular band who can bring in 200 fans at the drop of a hat so you can play to a packed room............. but you're going about it backwards?

I'm not sure if you're mental or a genius! I hope it works out though haha!

Its in May so not exactly at the drop of a hat (depending on what weekend). From what he said i think the band that comes in takes the door so if you can fill it, its a good chance to make a few euro. Thought it looked dodgy at the start but in fairness i think its genuine.

Yeah but......... if i'm a band who can fill Whelans when I want by hiring it, bringing 200 people and making the door minus the cost of hiring the venue............ why do I need the OP? Why don't I just book it for the following weekend?

    Why do you need me?

    You don't of course?

I gotta assume you're just being rhetorical?

Look at it the other way... a popular band can make an easy grand or so by playing a fun show to a back room in a cool venue.

    What's the downside?

The other band will reschedule, and I'll do that gig as well... it's not a big deal, but sure it's potentially a cool opportunity for someone... that's it... no big secrets... obviously.

and another band has pulled out due to someone not being able to make the date...

    grrr...

    anyway, consider this a bump...

the gig is already getting a lot of promo, so... it's a cool opportunity...
