new tyres made my car "floaty"??

got 4 new tyres yesterday for my 02 TDDI Mondeo.

the old tyres were all random brands and wear, before it had 215/55/r16 fronts and 205/55/r16 rears before replacing them yesterday with 4 205/55/r16 Goodyear Excellence. bought them as i trusted goodyears more than any of the budget brands etc.

however the car is now handling worse! the car is handling like a boat, like it has a full load, the steering can be best described as "floaty".

should i be worried? are 205 fronts really that much different to 215s? could they just need a "bedding in" period?

Id say after a few hundred miles they will sit better on the road and all will be well. I find that to be the case with older cars where everything might not be an tight or aligned quite as they should. Check pressures though.
The narrower tyre would make a small difference too.

It could be softer tyre wall flex you are experiencing. Generally tyre compound gets harder by usage or they may be hard from beginning. you may be used to this with your old tyres. Try to increase pressure of tyres couple of psi and see if it gets better

Also tyres need to be driven around 100 miles to show their normal behaviour.

yea, havent checked the pressures yet but not sure will that make a huge difference. if anything, they feel like they could be over inflated.

maybe the grip just isnt there yet, hopefully they bed in because im far less confident driving at the moment.

Over inflated tyres lead to a loss in grip. Check the pressures and report back

I put a new set on my car a month ago and it didn't feel right until I had about 500 miles on them, felt like the grip was off and felt much more bouncy on the road too compared to the old set although no loss of grip. I'd say they take about 500-1000 miles to bed in.

sounds like a lot of bedding in there, could be a few weeks before the car feels better if thats the case, i wouldnt be doing huge mileage.

OP: Give it at least 200miles before getting worried or investigating further...

Do a few burnouts and donuts to remove the agent from the tyres to stop them sticking to the mould( I can't remember what it's called) or else drive carefully for a few hundred km's.

Goodyear excellence have extremely soft/thin side walls. This results in excessive tyre flex in corners and significantly less feedback from the road. They also tend look like they're flat even at the correct pressure.

Bedding in wont solve this design issue. If anything it will get worse as the tyre ages.

New tyres need a few hundred k to bed them in. That said, they could be worse tyres than what you took off.

they are not worse tyres anyway, the brands before were budget and random and 2 of them were bald with wire either coming out or already out.

anyway, checked PSI and they were fine so thats not the issue.

think the tyres are starting to bed in a bit though...

you think so? i picked these over a set of BF Goodrich and the side walls in them felt a lot thinner than the Goodyears.
