Aircon refill

I got the air conditioning pump changed recently in my 03 Avensis. I need to get the air con gas put back in, I was quoted from 140 to 195 to get this done. That seems a little pricey considering there's no problem solving required, just a refill thats all.

My question is, how many of those cans of refridgerent that motor factors sell would I need to refill the system fully?

There was a thread on this in the main motors forum not 2 days ago. There's a deal going for 65/70 Euro in Dublin for a regas at the moment. As I stated in the previous thread, this stuff is very very VERY poisonous, so I wouldn't play around with it myself.

Cheers for that. Thats a good price alright. Looks like I was being quoted to much. Thanks.

Micksgarage.ie was doing a DIY refill offer this week for less than 100 euros?

That is an absolute piss take. 140-195 for a re fill!!!! I would have thought 100 was a high price. Shop around. And better off not to use the cans. Also, the garage fitting the pump should be responsible for re filling. What if there are any leaks? Then it's back to him, then back again for another re fill.

Lads, I wont debate the pricing as I work overseas but bear in mind that if system had been opened to atmosphere for any length of time ( which it was as OP said compressor was changed) then it would need evacuation down to 500microns typically and replacement of the filter -drier receiver assembly ( the cylinder with the sight glass typically) on the liquid line.

The PAG oil in these car systems would also be highly hygroscopic and absorb moisture rapidly once opened to air ( like brake fluid would do) so it may need to be flushed or tested at least.
System may have metal fragement contamination if original compressor disintegrated!

HFC 134a is not highly toxic or dangerous to my knowledge but Refrigerant Handling in EC countries requires Certification and qualified techs / licensed premises. That's the way it's going if not already implemented.
