Tyres over-inflated

The tyre pressure alert came on the car (which I only have about 2 months). The tyres seem grand so perhaps very slow puncture.
But I checked the pressure of all the tyres last night and the two front were 38psi and back two were about 31psi, in the manual is says they should be about 31/32.

So my question is the two front being 38 a really bad thing!

I'm also still a bit confused where pressure warning came from. Perhaps they were all 38 and someone let some air out of the back ones for the laugh! or the sensor is faulty.

You will find MPG will be slightly worse at the correct PSI though.

Really? I always thought, and from my own experience, that under-inflation would result in loss of mpg.
I have found that if I had a slow puncture, my mpg would go down (sometimes by 5 or so mpg).
As soon as I inflate the tyres to the correct psi, mpg returns to normal.

Unless you mean that over-inflation will increase mpg - in which case I can understand also.

I've run on over-inflated tyres for a while and not managed to see more than an insignificant difference, mind I do mostly city driving so maybe some long-miler can benefit from it.

A tyre that is highly over-inflated will have a smaller contact patch which will reduce grip. You may get a slightly better mpg but you wont have as much grip.

They provide less rolling resistance because of the above so you also get a bigger benefit from the various hyper-miling coasting techniques.

Ran my tyres at 44 psi for all of last year. :o

It's not so obvious on a car but try it on a bicycle and you'll notice fairly swift

hello, just to give my two cents,

what type of car is it?

just one of my mates has an A5. we where going to Dublin a couple of weeks ago and alert went off when he was picking me up. so we checked them and the front tyres are set to 38psi, with the back at 32 psi.:eek:

could not believe it so checked the internet, and seems so.

pumped them up and not a stir since.
    :D:D
