I have been offered a position of working with a small IT consulting agency .

The owner is gifted, has worked on systems in my current company and provides training classes and courses globally, and is considered a leader in their field.

The issue is that this person owns the consulting agency. Although the experience would be second to none, Im unsure of what it would be like to work directly for the owner of a company.

They have much higher steaks in the company, and so for example, should i leave once the clock strikes 6 on a friday afternoon, they may see it as lack of dedication on my part.
From my current knowledge, the owner is a great person, but that may change when they become my boss.

Do you have any opinions on this?

It really depends on the person, they might be a little more demanding yes but they might also be more flexible and understanding then some middle management drone.

My concern would be that since they did everything, possibly by themselves, that the code base etc could be very.... odd.

I worked for an owner of a company and I didn't like it I found him very demanding and like you said when the clock struck 6 and I was leaving it was seen as me not dedicated to the job which I was but I didnt get overtime nor was it my business and I had all my work done within the opening hours of the business but it still wasnt good enough because it didnt look good

Needless to say I didnt last long my job was just that a job not my business way up the pros and cons yourself and always have an out if you decide to take it

In my experience it is much better to work for the owner of a company.

If you've ever worked for a multi-national you'll know the boss tends to only care about his career, and tends to do lots of things you disagree with, i.e. lying about things, covering things up, etc.

The owner of a company only wants to do what's best for the company so you will be working in a very honest environment.

Also in my experience they tend to really be nice to you if you are competent.

I have to agree with the above, I have worked in two companies where the owner ran the company and he was your direct boss, and in both cases, I found it a rewarding and a great experience.

In the most recent of the two jobs, it was the owner who ran the company, and his dad was a major partner, and I have to say they were excellent to work for. Yes I did work mad hours at times to get work done, but it was always acknowledged and if I wanted time off, like a Friday evening early, it was never a problem. I also received a very generous bonus, and was always treated very well. I got great experience across the board too.

I can only say that it can be a great experience!
