Hi guys if I am buying a car off someone - what forms and things do I have to fill out to ensure that I am actually legally buying the said car...?

So for instance if someone is looking for cash for the car I give them the cash - but how do I ensure that the car is legally mine then...? Do I have to get them to sign a statement saying that thecar is now mine - i would say that this can get especially messy where the seller will not issue a reciept for whatever reason...;)

You both sign the vlc and post it to shannon and then the car is yours basically

Edit: there was an identical thread last week, do a search and you'll find everything you need to know.

Best thing to do is bring a stamp and an envelope with you when collecting the car. Both of you sign the relevent sections and then both go to a nearby postbox and drop it in.

    That's probably a safe option.

In addition to it, there's nothing stopping a buyer and seller to write a contract of sale, which would include both seller and buyer details, vehicle details, and state that the seller is actually the owner of the vehicle at the moment of sale, and there are no hidden defects in the vehicle.
This written and signed in two copies for both parties.

Most people will send the form in quickly as any parking, toll or speeding fines will go to the registered owner from the time you get the car so they will be anxious to get it out of their name and in to yours. You should bring 2 notes with details of the purchase and that you settled in full and you both sign them, you keep one, seller keeps one, that way there's proof of a sale.

Here's a handy link to check if the car is in the process of changing ownership, when they receive the form from the current owner it gets registered and you will have an idea when to expect the updatted VLC in the post.
