A topic of some importance has arisen in another thread.... what are the bits at the end of a loaf of bread called. I have always referred to them as "the crust(s)" but some imposter... Keith something or other refers to them as "the heel"

    AH, your input is needed!

It's proper name is the heel. The crusts is just a colloquial term for it. But surely once it gets the point across... But I guess that's not enough for a pub argument.

I would say heel but according to wiki, you're both right
The first and last slices of a loaf (or a slice with a high ratio of crust-area to volume compared to others of the same loaf) are sometimes referred to as the heel or the crust of the loaf.

I remember being brought into a discussion about this once in work...

    ...I said I call'em the end or first/last slice.

fúckers stopped asking me pointless questions after that!

    The heel
Only Dubliners, alone in the world, call it heel.

Yes, the crust is also across all of the outside of the bread - the bit which is harder, but if we were mad bastards and cut the bread in any direction except diagonally we would be cutting the crust to begin with. Think about it.

    There.

    You got it.

Wait . I read it wrong. The bits on either side of the loaf are called the Heel. The bits either side of a slice are called the crust.

The heel is a stupid name for a particular piece of crust, then. Imagine a square loaf of bread - do you think the crust around any slice of bread could also be the "heel" were the loaf of bread cut differently?

    quite.

Or the rest of the world outside dublin. Obviously the heel is the crust. The around the edges could be the "heel" if cut differently.

I always just called it the end-bit. Avoids confusion and embarrassment.

Although, might I suggest that both heel and crust are the same thing?

When we were kids, there were fights over who got the heel.

It got to breaking point when both ends of the sliced pan were being opened before the loaf was finished.

 In my house, the end bits were the slices nobody wanted, usually my dad ended up eating them. Unless it was batch bread, then we all wanted them.

I call them crusts by the way.

The crust is the hardened brown stuff on the outside of the loaf.
The heels are the specific slices at either end which are mostly made of crust.

If you cut the loaf horizontally instead of vertically, the top and bottom slices would be called the heels, since they would be the end slices which are mostly made of crust. Referring to the heels as the crusts as if they are the only pieces of crust on the entire loaf seems strange and I've never heard anyone do it before.

It's good to see this important issue being discussed.

Even by this insane definition it is clear that this absurd "heel" business is also a crust, so it may as well be called a crust - since saying " I'll have the crust" is obvious.

The heel fanatics should admit defeat. Its getting embarrassing.

The heel is on your foot, not on bread. Its a crust.

Another important issue to discuss is the plastic thingy that milk comes in with a lid. What's that called? I have always called it a bottle. Someone I know calls it a jug. So what is it?
