6 speed to 8+speed

    does anyone know how hard it would be to change a 6 or 7 speed bike to an 8 or more speed, obivously new wheels but what about spacing for the axle btw its an early 90,s reynolds 531 steel bike that i really like and would like to upgrade eventually

    you can get shimano 105 8speed downtube shifters and Dura Ace 9speed shifters. if its 1990s frame you shouldnt have to spread the dropouts too much. most would be 4mm.

    if i do it the downtube shifter will be going ( and welcome to sti) and i just want to know is it alot of hassle or just a bit of tweaking

    I wouldnt call it hassle but STI makes it expensive.

    thats not something i'm to bothered about as i will collect the parts over time and then in the winter fit them all

    Its very easy,instead of spreading the frame I'd recommend removing non driveside spacers and dishing the wheel,dont know how much you want to replace on the bike,if you go with 8 speed both mechs and the chainset will work,if you go 9 or 10 they wont.
