What type of cycling are you doing?

I wear the same clothes as I wear off the bike. But I very seldom cycle more than 30km in any one day.

Not 30km cycling! 10 maybe 15km on a giant hybrid.

You'd be ok wearing everyday clothing, but maybe investing in some raingear. If the weather is changeable, bring an extra t-shirt or jumper so you can adjust your temperature up or down by adding or taking off layers.

I find trousers wear out a bit quickly from contact with the saddle, but that's my only complaint about everyday clothing and cycling moderate distances.

There is excellent cycling-specific clothing available. I just have never bothered with it.

Depend is you are fit and won't sweat, or aren't fit and going to sweat a lot.

Are you just commuting on a bike or are you cycling to get fit & hoping to increase the distances you cycle as you get fitter?

If you do this, get proper mountain bike shorts. Regular shorts have a seam up the middle which gets uncomfortable.

I bought this after it was suggested by DirkVoodoo a while back. I multi-purpose use out of it (although it's got no pockets). The sleeves are long and the zip can be difficult but I like it a lot. At 50% I'd say that it is worth it. I have a few dhb (Wiggle's own brand) items and I'm happy with all of them.

As other people have said if you are commuting 15k then regular clothes will be fine.

I'd get some gloves for two reasons. Firstly if you come off the bike you'll probably scrape your hands without them and secondly, for me anyway, my bars get dirty and this transfers to my hands.

With regular trousers some sort of ankle band like the one below is handy for keeping the cuff free of oil.

Personally I find regular clothes too warm and restrictive. I started out with just my regular footie gear, track suit, and then slowed added to it as I need it.

Gloves, cold wind is a killer.
Rain, Viz jacket, mainly as windproof block, rain.

For the summer I don't need much else. Winter or rain is a different story.

i only commute about that distance and find that normal tshirts, shorts etc are fairly horrible (i'm sweaty at the best of times)

so while i might look like an eejit all lycra'ed up for a short distance at least i feel comfortable!

if you're getting a rainproof jacket get the best you can afford, i got a cheapie last year that wasn't breathable and never wore it as ended up soaked regardless or whether or not it was actually raining

If it rains I expect to get wet. My jacket is mainly to keep the wind out.
