i only got 45 in an assignment i have yet to sit the exam for the subject

the assesment works 70% for the exam and 30% for the assignment

ive gotten 60 and above in everything else

has this ruined my chances of getting a 2:1 degree?

I am so upset and disheartened over this result i am really worried about the exams i have coming up now what if i dont achieve a 60 or over for them that means the last few years hard work and sacrifice have been for nothing....

is it not just a joke if u dont get a 2:1 or higher in your degree especially a law degree what are my chances now of competing with anyone i feel like a complete idiot for thinking i could do a law degree

i am so dissapointed in myself

I think every person who has ever done a degree has had that feeling at some stage. Everyone had bad results now and then, if you normally average 60+ then it was clearly just a blip, whether it was because you missed the point of the assingment or just didnt put enough time in, its nothing innately bad about you! Try not to be too disheartened.

As for your result, when you actually do the maths you really havnt lost that much. FOr anything in law the highest you could really get is around 70%. You got 45%. thats 15% less than the best. And as its only worth 30% of the module, basically you just dropped a few percent overall- an extra bit of work for that subject, get the mid sixties on the exam and you could still get a 2:1 in that subject.
Even if you got a 2:2 in the subject, you could still get a 2:1 overall- I got two 2:2's one year but still got an average two one and a big firm training contract lined up next year.
So dont lose hope, the fact your so worried shows you are very committed and one bad result really isnt that bad at all :)
Take it from someone who's been there a good few times :)

I'm going to assume your course is the same as mine and that it takes extreme quality of work to reach over 80% (this mightn't be the case though - by extreme I mean basically it never EVER happens)

it's a little bit of maths:
    45/100 = 0.45
    0.45 x 30 = 13.5

so far you have earned 13.5% of your module. let's say you work your butt off and achieve 70% in your exam.

    70/100 = 0.7
    0.7 x 70 = 49

    49 + 13.5 = 62.5% which is a 2:1

Don't stress! Everyone gets a mediocre result here and there. If you really feel worried there's sabbaticals in each student union who are only too happy to talk with you about this kind of thing. Try and keep a cool head and focus on the studies, you'll get there in the end :)

If you don't get a 2:1 its not the end of the world... Or at least thats what I keep telling myself!

    exactly whats wrong with Ireland. 45 + 15 is 60 not 70!

Yes; I think we should all ponder how that minor & trivial mathematical error/oversight perfectly illustrates the problems we, as a nation, face.

    dont stress

one crap result will not sink your career

That being said law is a very competitive market place at the moment (at least for solicitors getting apprenticeships and jobs, us barristers no one ever really looks at our grades). So a crap result in one exam isn't a disaster, provided its kept as a once off.
