Donating your body to science.

Does anyone know how would you go about donating your body to science and how would you arrange it. I have heard that after a few months the body is given back to the family for burial, is this true? And does it have to happen? Would be grateful for any information.

what's left of the body is given back.
all that was left of the cadaver we worked on in college was the head, neck, and spine. haven't a notion what happened the rest of him!

I know someone who did that but I'm not sure you get the body back.

by the time I'm finished with my body even science will not want it.

You don't have to get it back, afaik.

    You register with this lot.

Contact the medical schools with your inquires. They will have people who deal with this kind of thing

Might be 2 years before your body is returned to relatives.

Contact the universities anatomy department. They recently just held an inter-faith ceremony for the donors in TCD. I didn't go myself but it was meant to be really nice.

I wouldn't do it myself but its a great way for health science students to learn about the body and I'm grateful I got the chance to learn. Anatomy is my favourite subject.

Read the small print in your organ donor card.

I'm donating my body to science fiction.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

I'm donating my body to the Catholic church, I've heard they're almost out of body of Christ.

They'll market it as "I can't believe it's not Jesus".

I know I'll be dead and all, well, I'd hope so, but some of the stories I've heard from medical students about how they treated their cadavers would make me think twice about this.

That's already been done without you knowing about it but you're worth more alive than dead to them......;)

I will not be donating my body to science. In anatomy i have licked ears, picked noses and made out with cadavers (the usual basic dares) and, while i am more than comfortable doing this to others (a shifts a shift), i would not be as comfortable having it done to me, thank you very much...

Very, very mild compared to some of the stories I've heard. Positively dignified in fact.

If your going to do it at least see what the state of play is in Ireland with people making profit from your body that your family/causes you support will never see.

stories from USA, no idea if similar issues here

If Im interested in donating my body for medical science how do I go about actually doing it.

If there a register one can sign up to or does one have to make a will or is it a matter of informing ones next of kin and hoping they go along with ones wishes ?

I heard your family get the body back after five years or so and receive a payment

I could be wrong though but I heard that before

I know of someone who died recently and who left his body to medical science. Apparently, his family will get whats left back in ashes in about 3yrs time. I did briefly consider it myself till I read some of these posts, licking dead peoples ears:eek::D??

What about all those skeletons which wind up in school science labs ?

I thought one of the reasons why people donate their bodies to medical science was to spare their families (if any) the expense of a burial/cremation/whatever ?

I doubt the dead people were too bothered what with being dead and all ?

Thanks for all the replies I m going to register to donate my body using the link Nodin provided. I'm not a religious person so would not want a funeral mass and really don't want to be buried in a graveyard owned by any church because that would involve giving them money. I have always kinda half considered doing this but it now seems like the most sensible option for me, saves on expense and nonsense of a funeral and will benifit medical students and who knows what else. Really not bothered what happens to my corpse when I die, whether they sell bits of me, carry out dares or use it as a comedy prop, doubt I'll be in much of a position to notice and who knows where a bit of me could end up.

If they could guarantee that would happen I'd be more than happy to donate my body to hilarity.

The tale I heard was that some students had removed limbs from a cadaver and were ambulating rapidly around the lab in a competitive manner with the aforementioned limbs asking "what's this ?"

The answer of course was the arms race

I can't speak for other medical schools, but in UCD, no way would that be allowed. We're not allowed remove anything from the cadavers, everything that you cut in dissection, aside from a little bit of fat, has to be placed back in afterward.

As for the licking ears, etc that someone else mentioned, I don't doubt that it happens, but I've never seen anything of the sort in my experience, all students I've encountered have been much more respectful than that.

As for the OP, good on you, cadavers are absolutely invaluable to medical students and it's much appreciated. As far as I know in UCD, the remains are cremated within 2 years and the ashes returned to the family.

Can you sell your body to science? And get the cheque while you're still alive obviously.

After playing Portal I've thoroughly decided not to donate my body to science on the off chance that I wake up someday in an enrichment center.
