Thought Actraiser was a piece of piss to beat? Actraiser 2 on the other hand was rock hard and rubbish to boot.

Anyway mine big one was being able to 1 credit Ghouls n'Ghosts on the Megadrive and the arcade, probably my proudest achievement. Could also 1 credit Carrier Airwing and Mercs but they aren't all that tough.

Also beaten most of the Contra games but the hardest of them all is Contra Hard Corp which I could clear quite easily.

One of the hardest games I beat was Final Fantasy Tactics which was an absolute whore to get through but so satisfying.

Last Ninja 2 on the Commodore 64. Took me an entire summer when I was ten.

Best I've done is beat Yoshi's Island 100%...

Oh, and DKC2 speedruns. But they're PAL so not comparable to "world" records.

Green Beret on the C64 . I remember I had to play with my shoes off because I had to use my foot to press the spacebar to shoot flamethrowers etc , my foot used to be half frozen playing it in winter ! I could also finish slapfight in the arcade in 1 credit , it would just wrap around to the start again. No one else in my local town could finish it but I could kill the final boss with the most basic weapon in the game .Have tried it on mame in recent years & maybe the old reflexes aren't as good as they used to be because I can't finish it any more  Oh I could also 1 credit Ghosts n goblins in the arcade , that's another game I cant clear anymore in mame !

Ninja Gaiden on the Xbox on the hardest level was a hard game to beat, absolutly a joy to play though, it flowed seamlessly when beating up bunches of enemys.

    Master of the Universe

Most recently probably would have been House of the Dead 2 on original mode to unlock red blood. Almost broke my hand and my lightgun in the process. It really is RSI stuff.

My own top one would be Metal Slug. Can finish it in three credits, have the first 5 stages down in 1 credit. Have the first three stages down without getting hit at all. I'll 1 credit it one of these days.

Hmm, have tackled a few apparently rather hard games, but most just required patience. Demon's Souls was just getting past the initial difficulty spike and later that cursed swamp level. Ninja Gaiden Xbox was occasionally a pain but not that bad. Death Smiles is the only game I've ever managed to 1CC, but even that was with the easiest character and mostly level 1-2 difficulty (think Port Town was my only level 3).

Hardest for me was beating Seth in Street Fighter IV. The missus was begging me to just leave it for about three nights running, but it was worth it in the end. Even she give a little shout of joy :D

Could never beat the final boss. You know the one where you had to fight all the previous bosses again? But, I have to say, I think that's in part because my heart just wasn't in it.

Hardest game I finished was probably Super R-Type 3.

Edit: Also meant to say that I don't think Faxanadu on the NES was that hard. A challenge, sure, but not rockhard so to speak.

Yeah that was a pain but just took a bit of practice. You could go back and max out your health in the god sim sections as well to make it easier. Some of the bosses you could kill without taking any damage apart from 2 really cheap ones and you usually got to the last boss with 2 lives left and he wasn't too tough for me.

Do you mean Super R-type or R-type 3? R-type 3 is tough but Super R-type is unfair and the lack of checkpoints is unforgiveable.

Hmmm, I thought it was called Super R-Type 3 as everything in those days was prefixed with a Super but yeah, I mean R-Type 3.

I thought sonic 2 on the mastersystem was pretty hard, took me a fair few tries to get through it.

Mighty Magus on the spectrum. That was tricky game.

Completing DKC2 102% when I was about 8. No easy feat, I'll tell you that. I can't even do it now without struggling.
