Irish filming locations?

Theres something im a bit confused about lately that maybe someone on here might know a bit about.

Ive been seeing northern Ireland as a filming location for a few things lately which is fantastic, i know both game of thrones and your highness were filmed in the north which again is great news but what im confused about is there seems to be a deliberate disinterest in filming any part of it south of the border.

Dont get me wrong, this is in no way an north vs south thing, the north has, im sure, more then enough scenery and castles for both of those productions, i just find it strange that for example while game of thrones was being filmed up north they didnt shoot a scene at Trim or something along those lines.

Is this merely a different country/different agreement thing or what because i thought Ireland had very competitive tax rates etc for film productions?

I say it has mostly to do with the travel cost down to the South as most film companies would be based in Dublin or Belfast so they would tend to go with places closer to them.

Game of Thrones fiilms was filmed in the Paint Hall studio, one of the largest in Europe, and they got it for free.
NI has leapt ahead of the South in terms of film infrastructure and it's very cost competitive. What do we really have? Ardmore? It's tiny and often booked out.

I think the tax breaks that use to entice film makers south of the border are gone now or am I wrong?

They're still in effect, lots of features being shot here all the time only not the large scale one we were used to.

It also says 'Produced with the support of investment incentives for the Irish Series Industry provided by the government of Ireland' - explain!

Morgan O'Sullivan was talking about Ardmores lack of space recently,
Plans are already under-way for a new 3 new studio development in Wicklow. Lets hope Morgan will continue to strive to see this second film studio up and running in the near future.

Cheers guys, good info. Infrastructure didnt even cross my mind, makes perfect sense that that would be why the south presents a less viable option.
