Can brushing after every meal do more harm than good in that it might damage the enamel of the tooth?

I saw a hygensit last week and he said to be careful about overbrushing, brushing too hard useing too hard a toothbrush.

Twice a day with medium brush, 45 degree angle to teeth with bottom bristles touching the gumline.
    Short gentle strokes.

He also told me to use extra fine dental sticks every day as they are the key to healthy gums. I had loads of calcified plaque and slightly imflamed gums due to not using the sticks.
