For those not following today's race....

Not good news from an Irish perspective today :-) Looks like Roche and Martin both crashed. Sounds like it was just the two of them.

    12:03 UTC

We've not seen it ourselves but we're hearing reports that both Dan Martin and Nicholas Roche have crashed out of the race.

    12:20 UTC

Roche we're hearing has gone to hospital. We'll bring you more once we know it.

    12:39 UTC

News in that Dan Martin has also been taken to hospital.

Just to let you know you can read most of the post by just holding your mouse over the thread topic....which I always do before opening a thread... probably worth putting up a few lines at the top such as..

First post in a specific race or stage thread should not include race information which could spoil someone's enjoyment of delayed coverage

Follow up in a second post with any such information (which does not need to be put in spoilers for specific race/stage threads)

I hope Roche and Martin are not too bad, would be so disappointing if both had serious injuries and lose out on valuable prep for the summer.

What a phenomenal kick. I'm a big fan, but I simply didnt think that he could do it on such a steep kick, especially against a host of class Spanish finishers.
I hope he follows through this Saturday.

Fair play to Philip Deignan finishing 23rd, a mere 28seconds down. Hopefully this will kick start his season. The guy needs a bit of luck and a good year. Well done.

Just watched the highlights. Incredible finish from Gilbert again. He's in some form!

Any word on Roche & Martin?

Terrific result from Philip Deignan. Seems his form is returning this season. Any further news on Dan and Nicholas?

Gilberts kick on the Mur was the most impressive I have seen in a long time , even a strong Cadel Evans would have been burned today. He was just toying with the rest of them. Love to get the lowdown on his power output. I actually fancied Rodriguez to take the win today as the finish suits his style and he is in great form with an impressive team to support him. At this rate it looks like Gilbert will do the Ardennes Triple. Incredible talent and still only 28.

I wonder was Alberto keeping his powder dry for Sunday and is Andy coming into good form just at the right time. Looking at todays results Rabobank must be getting desperate at this stage. LBL should be fun as a lot of riders in good form. Even Vino showing that he can't be ignored :( Lets hope he, Contodor or Di Luca are not on the podium but wouldn't bet on it

I thought this wouldn't be his race, that the Mur was too steep a finish for him and that Contador and Rodriguez would be the men to beat. Boy was I wrong.

    Contador isn't racing on Sunday.

Wow what a finish by Gilbert, some power, I thought it would have been perfect for Rodriguez, but he blew them all away, different league atm.
So......how powerful was it: well I set about trying to establish that: note, I could be wrong !
Last 1km, altitude rise of 115m (from ClimbByBike), but as you know it's not a steady rise, it has 11/17/26% sections, the group (Gilbert incl, from youtube) passed under the 1km banner at 7:15, Gilbert passes finish line at 10:03 (slowing down!!), so from 2peak.com: that's 582W, 8.31W/Kg, 21.4km/h
(I've put Gilbert at 70kg, but please correct me if I'm wrong)

    Last 1km:
    300-400 meters: 6.0%
    400-500 meters: 10.0%
    500-600 meters: 11.0%
    600-700 meters: 11.0%
    700-800 meters: 10.0%
    800-900 meters: 17.0%
    900-1000 meters: 15.0%
    1000-1100 m: 14.0%
    1100-1200 m: 15.0%
    1200-1300 meters: 6.0%

67kg according to the all-knowing Wikipedia
And as for the nefarious suggestions from dewindygap, Gilbert is widely respected as a clean rider.
