Unsolicited mail

Hi folks, quick question for ye on the legal standing of unsolicited mail.

I've recently applied for planning permission and the amount of unsolicited mail I'm getting from builders and companies is unreal. Today I've come down stairs to find 4 more envelopes addressed to me, with adverts from builders and companies involved in the building trade.

All of them state that they are aware I've recently applied for planning permission. So that means they either used the notice in the paper which was over 5 weeks ago. Or they are using the city council website to get my information (more likely).

Is this a breach of the Data Protection Act? I know the information is in the public view, but surely there is some protection for the applicant from this due to misuse of a database. ie: My information is there to notify my neighbours that I'm looking to build an extension and give them an avenue to object. Not to act as a sales tool for companies.

    Any input would be appreciated.

There is nothing you can do about the public record being accessed. If anyone stores data they got from it, there would be a breach of the Data Protection legislation.

Couples who give notice of intention to marry also suffer dreadfully from people pimping their wares and services - from flowers to frilly knickers to wedding DJ's to photographers.
