    Hello all,

Searching the web and queries sent to both Westport local tourist office and Mayo coco has proved fruitless on this query.

Does anyone know if the extension of the Great Western Greenway From Westport to Newport has been completed yet? Heading down to Westport this weekend for a gander at the Newport to Mullranny section anywho.

    Thanks in advance

    It's not finished yet.

As fare as I know some of it is being completed as part of the contracts for an upgrade (alignment improvement & resurfacing) to sections of the N59.

I know the detailed design of the Kilbride section (only couple of km), which included sections of the Greenway, was awarded recently, but not sure on the rest of it. hope that helps....

Page 2 of this weeks Connaught Telegraph has an article on it that you "will be able to travel from Westport to Achill off-road as the Great Western Greenway opens for its first visitors this Easter".

Can't find it online to link to it for you.

I drove the road from Westport to Mulranny last weekend, and I couldn't see how it would be finished by Easter.

Work was underway, some was complete, but it looked to me like there were sections still to be cleared.

I'm assuming my Defy 4 (2010) with 25mm tyres would be less than ideal!

Sorry to go off on a minor, yet related, tangent, but any recommendations for cycling it? I'm assuming a cheap MTB would be better?

I've a Lapierre Shaper 100 hybrid too, that could be repurposed if deemed suitable by the boards.ie collective!

The bikes you can hire are general run of the mill hybrids. You dont need anything special.
I know loads of people who have not ridden a bike in years who rode the Newport to Mulranny section

From asking Coveys it seems Westport to Newport is rideable unoffically at the moment.

    Thanks for that!

Might order some new tyres it the hybrid and give it a lash over the summer!

I've ridden it with a road bike, with 23mm tyres.

Surface is hard packed gravel. There's the odd loose bit along the way.

Something with wider tyres would be more suited to it, but its certainly doable on a road bike.

Thanks for all the reply guys.

Recieved this email this morning from Westport Tourist Office:

    ''XXXXXXX

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner but our email has been down. The only part of the Great Western Greenway which is officially open is the part between Newport and Mulranny (17km). The part between Westport and Newport and Mulranny and Achill Island is still under construction and should be completed within the next couple of weeks.

If you require any further information please do not hesitate to contact me.

    Regards
    XXXXXXXX''
