Dodgy iPhone app?

I have an Apple 3GS iPhone with a 1GB allowance for €10/month for 3G data. Normally I never actually use the full 1GB but my March/April bill shows I've used over 5GB! I normally would use WiFi whenever possible.

The bill is itemised but the breakdown reveals that this phone must have a mind of its own because at very strange times of the day and night there was anything up to 600 and 700MBs being used.

I rang the Vodafone helpline and all they said was they couldn't tell me what was using the data, eg an app, except it was streaming through 3G and that maybe I'd be better off on another package.

Has anyone here had the same experience?

    Is it a dodgy App?

It also seems to me that, looking at the early morning times I was still at home and connected to my WiFi, there was still a charge for using 3G.

Vodafone have no satisfactory answer to this so I've now disabled the 3G service on the iPhone.

There's 3G and another thing called "Cellular Data", is that the one you mean? Whats the difference there?

Cellular data will use GPRS and Edge. 3G consumes more power, so some people turn it off to save battery if they are not using data intensive apps. Cellular data will still maintain a data connection to the network and use up your data allowance.

But realistically there is no way you could consume 5GB of data from background running apps. Do you use any audio/video streaming apps? Maybe your wi-fi was offline and you were not aware of it at the time. Or is your device tethered to another device and you were connecting to the net through your phone?

What App's do you usually use? For an App to stream data you have to run it and then background it. Is the phone jailbroken?
