Was talking to my mate in Canada. She mentioned she would be around after Supper to give her a shout then. Told her its called tea over here she was astounded. Got me thinking. Why do we call it tea.?

Does anyone know why we call or late evening meal "Tea" instead of "Supper"? over here.

We only have the tea on weekends. On weekdays we call it dinner. On the weekends, we'd have the dinner at 1pm and the tea at 5 :pac:

I call it dinner. Tea is a disgusting hot drink made from tea leaves.

I suppose people call it tea because they have a cup of tea while they're eating. I usually wash my dinner down with a glass of Robinsons, Mi Wadi or Tesco orange squash. I think I might start referring to my dinner as orange squash.

I don't call it tea, and you don't even know why you do, so speak for yourself & don't be giving Canadians the impression that we're all idiots.

    It's simple:
    Breakfast.
    Lunch.
    Dinner.

And everything in between is a snack.

"Tea"? What about when there's no tea involved? Do you have to rename it? And what if you have a cuppa at 2:45pm - is that then teatime? Makes no sense.

Whenever I visit relations up north they always call fish and chips a "fish supper".

I never got fish and chips at lunchtime. Is it still a fish supper then?

Who the hell calls it supper?

I call it dinner. I don't say supper. I call the hot drink made with tea bags 'tea'.

    I agree with Forest Master,
    Breakfast.
    Lunch.
    Dinner

The only people I have ever heard using tea instead of supper were english people !

So it's definitely not an Irish thing!

    I just found this.

    I just found this.
It all becomes clear now. Anyone who says "tea" in reference to a meal is British.
