Running in warm weather

    Is anyone else finding they are getting really thirsty since the weather got warmer?

    I tried to run home from town yesterday after work (6k) and i think I may have done a few things wrong -- i think my t-shirt was too heavy, and also I had a little bag with my keys / phone etc that kept swinging around and annoying me, but anyway, I was SO THIRSTY that I had to stop and walk for a few minutes at about 4k.

    I am not the fittest, and I know that fitter runners don't need to drink as often, but I run 5k a few times a week with no bother, and usually do a 10k or two at weekends, and in the winter I didn't have this problem at all.

    I drank a glass or two of water before I left work, but how do you find the balance between being so dry & thirsty that you feel like you're in the desert and drinking too much and looking for bathrooms en route.

    I am getting a bit worried about this as have a few 10k races thsi summer and don't want to be defeated by thirst.

    You could look at your general level of hydration - not just the couple of glasses you drink in the afternoon before a run, but the water you drink the day before too.

    I knew I was going out for a 6km tempo run at lunch time today so I had been drinking plenty of water all morning. Got home and had another glass before heading out and I fine. I did sweat buckets as well, time to ditch the track suit bottoms :D

    wearing light, breathable clothes will obviously help keep your temperature down. That means a technical top (or a singlet) instead of a cotton t-shirt, and shorts or capris instead of a tracksuit :eek:

    Tracksuit??
    I think for perhaps two runs during the whole year I used a tracksuit and that was only because it was very cold and I didn't have any tights handy.

    Shorts the rest of the year ftw :D

    I've got big bright blue shin compression sleeve's on at the moment so I'm wearing the tracksuit bottoms for another couple of runs before they come off.

    You didn't think I was wearing them for fun! :P

    dehydration. drinking lots of water will not hydrate you. your body will only take in a small amount. the reason why people drink sports drinks is that this is 7% carb in them. This is enough for your body to think its food and your body then takes it in and the water with it is a by-product that rehydrates you. Orange cordial can do the smae trick. Before running home monitor the color of your urine and if its dark your dehydrated. If you work in an office with air conditioning then it could really make the humidity low in the office. Do you get headaches at work. If so probably dehydration again. I use a humidifier at work and monitor the humidity of the air. You may think I am mad but the humidity at work was 20% which is the same as a desert and when its would be 70-90% outside normally. Read a few articles on proper hydration for sport and you'll be set.

    Thanks everyone! I don't have air conditioning, we just open the windows, but I will definitely try to drink more throughout the day.
    Also, this weather I normally wear shorts, but because I was getting a bus 1/2 way & then running the last 6k, I was wearing 3/4 lengths & a big t-shirt to look more normal on the bus. Fewer clothes & more drinks next time!

    I agree, Do you remember back in April when we are planning for running in hot weather. That was a nice problem to have.

    Bought myself a Camelbak recently. Living in the Midwest USA, humidity has been brutal lately along with the 30+ Celsius beating down. I wanted to do my long run (~18-20 miles) and only about 1/3 of the way there last week! I won't be caught out again. :)
